L-lysine is a BIG BIG BIG help for me. The last cold sore I got never amounted to a hill of beans, and I am sure it was because I nipped it in the bud with lysine. 500 mg once a day. I am staying on it as an experiment to see if it helps with my canker sores too. I only get a cold sore about once a year, but the canker sores are more like 4-5 times a year. So far so good, even though I have been consuming one of my canker sore "trigger foods"....chocolate. L-lysine fights Herpesvirus because it competes metabolically with arginine. Interestingly, nuts and chocolate (common canker sore triggers) are high in arginine, which Herpes needs lots of. My theory is that canker sores are also caused by Herpes (I KNOW this is not mainstream thought), and by taking lysine I am negating the trigger effect. Like I said, so far so good over the past 2 months.
