***11. Honey for sore throats and various attributes. A drop on a passifier to get
the infant to suck on it to enhance GI peristolsis and move gas bubbles
may result in colic.*********
NEVER give infants honey. The following is from the Mayo clinic:
Never give honey to infants younger than 1 year. Honey is a known source of bacterial spores that produce the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. This bacterium makes a toxin that can cause infant botulism. This rare but serious form of food poisoning affects a baby's nervous system and can result in death. Unlike adults, infants haven't developed beneficial bacteria in their digestive tracts that can control botulism spores and prevent growth of the bacterium and production of its toxin.
Signs and symptoms of infant botulism include:
Persistent constipation
Floppy arms, legs and neck
Weak cry due to muscle weakness
Weak sucking and poor feeding
Tired all the time (lethargy)
Botulism spores are also found in uncooked food. For this reason, feeding an infant any undercooked food is risky as well.

these are really good...
Mine isn't really a home remedy, but a naturopathic remedy that works like magic.
Arnica Gel for aching muscles, head, bruises. My friend gave it to me a while back--I am an eternal skeptic (with a neck injury). I rubbed it on my neck and the results were amazing! In less than a minute I felt better. Boyfriend uses it to help migraines in the early stages (rub it between eyes/forehead). Brand I use is Boiron.

Feeding your dog brewer's yeast in with his food is great for keeping the fleas away.

We use a super Tonic for anyone in the house that might be coming down with any illness.
use equal parts of cheyene pepper, onion, garlic, horse radish, and ginger, cover it with organic apples cider vinegar. Let it sit at least one month. At the first sign of cold, flu, or sore throat, take as much as you can. (we usually take 1/4 cup at a time) you repeat this every couple hours. For the kids, i take 2 tablespoons and mix it with 1/4 cup of apple juice and add a teaspoon of sugar and let them take a spoonfull at a time. I have them do this every hour if they are coming down with something.
I also make an echenasia (sp) tainture by covering the dried herb with 80 proof vodka. Let it sit for 4 weeks. We use it as a booster to our immune system during the "flu" season. I use a dropper and drop 4-6 drops under the tongue several times a day.
I also make a wonderful sore throat syrup that is so wonderful....it works great. I found this recipe on the www. I have used this with the kids and it works wonders. My hubby has sinus problems and if he has a scratchy soar throat, he takes a few ounces and feels much better.
i boil honeysuckel, leaves and flowers- about 2 cups then cover them with water. Bring to a boil, then turn heat down and let it simmer for 10 minutes. Turn off, let cool then strain when warm. The add 1 cup of honey to the strained liquid. I then added 1 package of koolaid unsweetened lemonaid and 2 crushed vitiman c pills stirring till all desolved. I then put in several small plastic bottles and put some in frig and some in freezer. It stays good for about 4-6 weeks in frig and even longer in freezer.

Hey Belinda!
I have a gallon jar of the "super tonic" brewing in my kitchen right now! Unfortunately, this cold hit before the tonic was ready! So - I had to bum some off of my friend. It's helping but I waited too long to beg for the tonic.
For sore throats - make a tea from fresh ginger (simmer it in water for about 10 minutes) to the ginger water, add about 2 T lemon juice, some honey and some mint.
For bruises and swellings - comfrey poultices
For sunburn - as a soap & lotion maker, I discovered this combo: emu oil, aloe juice, lavender essential oil and tea tree essential oil along with distilled water makes a great sunburn salve.
For headaches - mint tea and some mint & lavender oils on the temples
For colds - green tea with sage, thyme, peppermint, lavender and elderflower.
For pms symtoms - tea with mint, valerian, raspberry leaf
For cuts and scrapes - I make an ointment with emu oil and tea tree as two of the main ingredients.
Question - where can I obtain arnica? Thanks!

Some quick questions. Although I have used some teas like mint, lemon balm, etc. I am pretty new to all the others. Can all the herbs mentioned be found at a regular store, or would I need to go to a specialty shop? Where does one find Emu oil? And last, but not least what is Comfey? I've never heard of it befor.
I have always used hot toddies for colds and especially to burn out fevers. Guess it is the cowgirl in me, I keep a bottle of whiskey in the cupboard at all times (though it only gets used when sickness is at hand) I love mint tea for a cold as well, but Hot Toddies seem to burn it out of you a lot faster. Great for use when your allergies flare up as well.

The best relief I've found for a bad case of poison ivy is to point your hair dryer at the itchy sores at point blank range. Keep it there as long as you can stand it -- usually about a second or two once the thing is warmed up. Be careful not to burn yourself! Do this on all itchy spots. In a minute or two you will no longer itch at all and the relief will last for several hours.
Apparently what this does is exhaust the stores of whatever substance your skin releases to tell your brain that it needs some scratching. Works on any sort of persistant itch, bug bites, etc. I'm not sure that it speeds up the healing process at all but since you won't itch you won't really care. This remedy saved my sanity the last time I got into poison ivy.

Most of the herbs I use are ones that I grow. You can get the dried ones in health food stores, order them on line, and sometimes you can get the herb tea bags at grocery stores. That can sometimes lead to very old herbs though. I have several nurseries in my area that carry herb plants so that's usually what I do each spring. Then I use them the herbs fresh during the spring & summer and cut them and dry them in the fall. You can try www.herbalcom.com and www.theherbladyonline.com (something like that) to start.
The emu oil I get is from a lady on Ebay. It's not the fancy cosmetic grade. It's just straight emu oil in a mason quart jar. Sometimes I can find her on Ebay, sometimes I can't. It's not cheap. Most emu oils will run about $40-50 per quart or more (yes, per quart ) but it goes a long way and it's very healing for most skin conditions. I use about 10-15% emu in the salve or sunburn remedy.
Comfrey is a pretty cool plant. I'm new to it this year but it's worked on bruises on me and the swollen up elbows on my poor old dog. It's also called boneset I think. Do some research on it online. That's how I found out about it. It can be invasive though so be careful if you plant some. Supposed to be beneficial for lots of ailments.
I'm also a fan of hot toddies but I've discovered that my DH make pretty darn good Elderberry wine and that works wonders on a cold or sore throat as well. Tastes pretty good too!
Hope this helps. I'm sure there are lots of others on here that know tons of info so just keep asking!

I use:
Super glue for minor cuts, human or animal.
Listerine sprayed full strength on livestock's back to prevent or help cure rain rot.
Diatemacous Earth (DE food grade) for flea, bug or lice control. Also added into pet food and cattle grain to help control worms (along with reg worming).
Lavender pouch next to pillow when sleeping.
White vinegar for cleaning house and rinsing pygmy buck after bath.
Epsom salt in bath.
When I raised Emu's, would pour large sack of DE on ground. They loved it and would dust themselves. Never had a bug on em'. I plan on doing that when I get chickens next year.

vegascowgirl, are you in vegas or is that just in your name??? reason i asked, is, i grew up in vegas...graduated from Valley High school...
But to the question... I purchase most of these herbs in a health food store or over the web. I have also went to my pharmisist and they have ordered me things like emu oil, or cocoa butter.
Comfrey

Ti tree essential oil is a must in my house. Whenever I feel an earache coming on, perhaps from a cold, I dab a little behind the ears. If done soon enough, you don't swell up. We also use it for cuts of any kind, and to clear up acne.
Ginger is antiparasitic and helps with many problems because of this. Tumeric, which kills ascaris, I use for asthma and have been breathing freely since I started using it about four years ago. Tumeric also regulates appetite. Garlic kills many parasites, bacteria, and viruses. It is very useful for flatulence, taking about a clove a day or more for a few weeks balances the system.
I make my own olive oil soap and use it not only for bathing, but also as a shampoo and laundry soap.
I've used castor oil to get rid of moles. A dab once or twice a day and they heal away from the skin from the outside in, then fall off.
For a sore throat, I just assume I'm getting sick and toss back the Vitamin C.
For seeing anything more that three feet away, I wear glasses.

At this time I do live in Vegas. Didn't go to school here though. Moved here 14 yrs ago and now I am just about to move to Missouri in a month. If you've been away from Vegas for a while (it has really boomed in the last 5 yrs), I can tell you it has changed drastically. There isn't a wall standing that doesn't have graffitti on it :waa: ....They are fighting right now to keep development out of Red Rock canyon. As it is, houses and casinos are built right up to it and Mt.Charleston. Just getting too crowded for my taste.
BTW, thanks for the url...much appreciated
