Do you guys remember the pack rats in Winnie-the-Pooh that were always taking stuff and paying for it with walnuts?

There may be some truth to that. When I lived in Arizona many people who lived there believed (or at least hoped) that pack rats would 'trade' gold nuggets for other shiny objects.

The belief came from miners' tales at the Vulture Mine (closed long ago) in Wickenburg, AZ. The miners claimed to have found gold nuggets in their belongings. The theory was that the pack rats may have found a shiny object, perhaps a button, and traded the gold nugget for the object.

True or not, many western Arizona residents to this day still leave small shiny objects outside in the hope that a pack rat will bring them gold. Hey, it only costs you an old button to try!
