Eyah. 7 cords easy in a 4 room Vermont house... and the second floor closed off and not heated! (that would be two of the four rooms...).

The value of insulation and caulk should not be underestimated!

We heat our estimated 2100 square foot hundred year old farm house (rotten windows) with an outside wood burning stove and a back up gas furnace. We go through about 6-8 cords a winter, depending on the winter and the wind. We live in north central WI and in a valley where the wind whips down through. Last year we used our furnace a little more because dh didn't have time to make very much wood. This year, not sure. We have three kids, including a four month old baby. We might need to keep it a little warmer than just above freezing for the baby. Becky

We can usually get by on 2 1/2 cords of mixed wood a winter and we live in Wisconsin. My house is only around 1000 square feet and it's an A-frame style that is built into the hill so it's pretty energy efficient. My SO owns a farm that is surrounded by a National Forest. He lets the DNR use his driveway and in return, when they cull trees every year, they drag the tops up by his farm so we get free wood! The last time I had to buy wood, it ran $65.00 a pickup load. I like it free alot better
