"If the dog food meets or exceeds your dog's requirement for nutrients, the source of the ingredients is immaterial. Dogs can thrive on totally synthetic or vegetarian diets if they are properly balanced. The only time the exact source of a food's ingredients matter is when dealing with food allergies."

When you cook meat [ie, processed dog food] you are altering what the makeup is of the protein. People need to cook meat due to our longer intestinal track. Dogs have a short intestenial and can digest raw meat/bones/organs just fine. Here is a link for you www.rawmeatybones.com

You are doing a huge diservice to your dog by feeding a vegetarian diet and I will gaurantee if you really research raw feeding and do it right you will see a 100% improvemnet.

Best of luck

I simply don't believe it. I think there are other properties and nutrients in food we have yet to understand the reasons for. Animals are meant to eat what they are meant to eat.

I gave him some benadryl and an oatmeal bath, and curled up with him until he fell asleep.

I got him into the vet today, and she said it looked like he went after his tail like corn on the cob! She combed him for fleas, and didn't find any or any flea dirt. (duh...just washed him less than 24 hours before) She gave him prednisone and had us treat both dogs and the cat with Advantage. If it doesn't go away, she said to go back. Could be yet ANOTHER food allergy!

Anyways - for those of you with itchy, allergic dogs, how do you treat their wounds? We have a BAD wasp problem. Do you think that a wasp would be able to get through a rough terrier coat?
one of our dogs has that problem we wash it down 3x a day with proixed and a antibacterial spray seems to work well on those hot spots

HELLO, This Vet is a looney toon if she believes that statement to be true. Have you heard of Mad Cow? This was because someone decided it was okay to feed herbivores an omnivores diet. Look what happened. All animals where designed to eat cetain foods. Some animals are suppose to eat vegtables some are meant to eat both and some are meant to eat meat.

This site is a no kill animal rescue [nothing wrong with that] but if you look harder at this site I believe it is peta based. Dont believe everything you read. Commom sense goes a long way.

Jillianjigs, has he ever tried a natural, truly high quality food (not talking science diet here!): No man made chemicals, no corn, human quality ingredients, less destructive cooking method (most foods are extruded under high heat and extreme pressure to cook them quickly)? I also a agree that a raw food diet would be a great thing to try for him. Have you tried odd meats that dogs have not commonly been fed, such as duck or lamb. Yea, those are expensive, but if you could feed the dog something healthy for a while (month or two), his body could possibly repair itself to the point it could handle other meats.

Anyway, this is what I would try, if my dog was unable to eat the Flint River.
