Not to start something, but those that are choosing soy milk instead of cows milk because it is safer need to do some research and decide if that is really a good statement. Most soy is GMO nowdays, and much of the research I have read seems to indicate that soy may not be good for us anyway. Just my 2 cents.

gccrook I was just about to say what you said.

Many/most soybeans are gmo, sprayed through out the year with pestacides, and then ground up and squeezed into milk. How is this better than cow's milk?

Then again I've already voiced my feeling over commercial milk. I have dairy goats.

If thats the truth that what are those of us to do that dont have access just yet to raw milk. It seems we have to choose between the lesser of two evils and right now to me soy seems the lesser of the two.

You can make fine mashed potatoes without milk. My dad is allergic to dairy, and I have learned to make them without milk or butter.

We've started buying our milk directly from the Mennonites (sp?) dairy, but I do not know if it is free of this chemical. We pay $2.00/half gallon in glass jars and we think the small price difference is well worth the quality. Brett said he feels alot better since he stopped drinking out of plastic containers. Not sure why, but I'm not about to agrue with him. Actually, I've started buying alot of grocery items from the Mennonites in the last couple months. I'd rather support the local farmers and the customer service can't be beat!

We have a bakery about an hour and an half from us too but it is so far away and with gas prices I cant make a weekly trip out there. We did buy their milk when we were closer and I enjoyed it a lot.

Now I read that Vitamin D (or D3) was added to milk to make the calcium in milk easier to absorb into the body. It was discovered that even those who drank raw or whole milk the majority of their lives were ending up calcium deficient because the body does not absorb calcium nearly as well as it does when combined with Vitamin D.

It's a nice explanation, but take it for what it's worth. I think the most interesting stat is:

"In the 1940's this milk supplementation process reduced the incidence rate of juvenile rickets by 85% in the United States."

They explain the process of creating Vitamin D3. It's no more pig skin in milk than lye in soap. (I assume you understand basic chemical reactions)

Lacto Ovo Vegetarians? That one is new to me, what is it? I know what a vegetarian is, so start there lol.

Most of the extreme animal rights people will pick out little sections of an entire process to attempt to ride that brief and sometimes false statement all the way to their side of thinking. IMHO purification of a product, means just that and the rest doesn't concern me much aside from rbgh.

Just curious though, a friend of mines' wife a few years back had surgery and they able to use part or all of a pig heart valve to replace hers that was damaged......is this against that religion? I really am just curious

Lacto Ovo vegetarians eat dairy products and eggs but no meat.

southerngurl--For the Jewish community, they are the ones whose religion require kosher foods right? Just wondering if consuming pork is a no-no then would a transplant like that also be a no-no ( because it was a pig valve ) from the religion side of it?

Well I've done it, all my reading about this has grossed me out. I tried to eat cereal this morning with milk and was barely able to finish it and couldnt drink any this afternoon with some eggs and toast. Guess it's time to switch. It's gonna be harder on my dd who is 8 and a big milk drinker I think I'll wait until we move in about a month to try it with her so I won't have to deal with how abusive it is to take her off milk that would be way to hard on her.

I'm pretty sure those following the "kosher" laws would consider a pig heart unclean. I would. (I follow the dietary laws laid out in Leviticus).
