I'm not accusing anyone here of anything. But, I wonder how many unregistered posters get on a forum, post a fake sob story begging for donations of computers, etc., and sell the stuff on ebay? Could make a pretty living doing that, I suppose.

IC now. Yes, I replied to your post and pasted his quote into it. I'll be more careful on that in the future.

It's alright, just thought it was kind of funny.

He needs to just start asking everyone he runs into if they have an old machine he can have. He can put up wanted signs in laundromats or whereever people gather. I started out with a Compaq with either 8 or 16 Megs of memory (state of the art at the time). I was able to upgrade it to 96 Megs but that was absolutely the most the slots would take. Did fine on it until AOL 9.0, when it was too small to host it, much less do anything else. Bought a new Dell with expanded memory. I have tried several times to give away the old monitor and CPU with zero success. Still usable for basic e-mail services without the bells & whistles of AOL. Thus, he may be able to find a still usable system for just going and picking it up.

unregistered, I would suggest that you submit letters to the major corporations in your area. It is customary for companies to upgrade and that leaves them with old, very well cared for equipment. They usually require backup information (ie doctor's recomendations or other proof of disability or handicap). If they feel your need is valid, they will often donate equipment to your cause. Essentially, it's a tax write off and it's a good deed as well. You will likely be called in for an interview or two and often they will try and help you out a bit with some part time work or casual work if you are skilled in an area they can use. It would be nice if you took the time to register if you're going to hang around for a while and maybe share some thoughts and ideas, like what brought you to us and your interest in homesteading.

.......................It , very well maybe the case, that the origional person , who , asked for help , is just blowing Computer smoke...Up our Skirt . But, I really think WE , collectively as a Group , Should keep our Condescending Remarks too ourselves . We, really don't have any accurate method to evaluate the Validity of the "NEED" for any individual . Slicing ...and ...Dicing ...should be Limited too the "General Chat" forum where it is Standard Operational Procedure . It , just serves NO USEFUL Purpose to assult someone, even if, in fact , their request is obviously without merit . I, personally , think it makes the "family" look bad....fordy....

I have a box here, with 2 fully loaded motherboards (processors &memory). both work A1.

one is a 160mhz, one is a 233mhz.

I even have some modems vid cards and a sound card for em.

now anyone can have these if they want em, prepay the shipping ebay style.
first off, they are both to slow to run 98se well, but they do run it if you dont overload it with "stuff".
if I was really desperate i would use them but bigger better faster can be found anymore in the goodwill or paper. I see "whole systems" that are 400 and 500 mhz systems for 150 bucks u haul it...
check the local paper and junk add papers.

its funny, these boards are worth more with the chips taken out and made into keychains than it is to sell em outright as what they are.

which is a nother suggestion for ya! raid the trash day street offerings and then go flea market.
new computer right there in a few weekends!
