It's commonly called a great egret, great white egret, or simply white egret. Great egret is what birders call them. The snowy egret is smaller, with more long plumage on their head. They are fun to watch. They are pretty common around these parts; we get them everyday at the end of our cove, stalking fish. I actually watched one catch about a 10" long catfish once and swallow it. Caught it on the fly after it jumped from our pier, and landed on the bank. It took him about 5 minutes and I thought he was gonna choke! Cool birds and that's a great photo!

Ok...what are those white birds that hang with cows & horses called? What we see on our pond isn't the same size bird.

Wow! Thanks so much for letting us share that shot! wonderful! This beautiful bird is indeed a Great Egret (Casmerodius albus) and boy am I jealous! LOL We only see the odd one here.

The smaller birds seen around cattle are probably the Cattle Egret..about 20" long? Some beige areas on chest and rear? By the By , the little Catte Egret is actually an old world bird, not known how or why they crossed the Atlantic? Interesting! Just appeared in South America one day in 1880 and then made their way slowly north.

Love that shot! LQ

The white birds that hang out with cows are cattle egrets. They are smaller and there are a million of them around my neighborhood. They have a buff colored blaze on their chest

Here is a snowy egret

and I believe that CJ's bird is a Great Egret

We have a lot of Great Blue Herons and Great egrets that live down in the river bottoms not too far from my place. One of the blue herons comes by my tank to fish a couple times a week if my dogs don't chase him off.

I saw the coolest thing a couple summers ago, we'd had an unuually heavy rain, and the road had flooded, and there was a great blue heron standing in the middle of the road fishing

That snowy egret is really pretty! I've never seen any of the smaller, "cattle" egrets around here. Maybe I should pay more attention

The place to see cattle egrets CJ, is, as the name implies, in a cow pasture, but I don't know if they have them in Missouri or not. They trail along behind and amongst the cows, horses, or even slow moving tractors eating grasshoppers and bugs stirred up by the cows. I've seen them riding on cow's backs or standing under a cow picking bugs off it's belly. Very cute. Nice example of symbiosis.

p.s. I was by Springfield the other day for a family wedding. Very pretty country up there.

Now THAT is a great shot! LOL I've never seen that in these parts, so I'm guessing we don't have them here.

The bottom photo is the one we see occasionally on our pond...he is HUGE. Its bill is orange. The picture that says Photo By George Jaimeson.

Sometimes we see the smaller egrets around the horses but more around the neighbors cows.
