This lousy soil I have had never shown me a worm until I raked a three inch layer of two year old straw that was very well broke down onto my asparagus patch. That next Spring that soil was so loose even quack grass roots came out whole and there were worms all through that area.
Put down the hay, straw, compost and they will come.
You don't need to buy worms just feed the ones you have and more will show up.

The worms I keep outdoors simply burrow below the frost line to hibernate during winter after depositing their last egg capsules deep in my garden beds before their winter nap.
