This homesteader uses them in the garden boxes, dumps them in my compost pile. This year used some for ice we had our share of ice this year for sure. Something else I use in the garden boxes is crushed egg shells, keeps out slugs and cut worms.

A person where I worked dumped ashes into a cardboard box an set it out on the car port to use later. Later noticed the car port and car were on fire.

You can sprinkle ashes over the cabbage, broccoli, etc. to discourage the little green worms.

Around here every year people burn down their homes by setting hot ashes near the house or other flammable material. Those little metal cans are really cheap insurance. I've got a patio block out back that I set the can on and it stays there until the ashes are good and COLD!!!!
