Find the nearest town with a college. Check when the college lets out for the summer. Put a "dorm fridge wanted" ad on CL. There should be a bunch of kids that want to sell their little fridge rather than take it home.

I would pay $75 or so if it was to be an only fridge, but for "extra" usage, $15- $25, MAYBE $50. Doesn't have to look pretty, just do the job I want it to.

Check out yard/garage/estate sales. Plus estate auctions *AT* the former homesite, NOT an auction barn (or yard) for the best price.

The International student's dorm is PRIMO for that sort of thing!

Yes it probably will.
If you do leave the lid open a bit it will still try to freeze and that will waste a LOT of electric power.
I belong to an Alternative Refrigerator yahoo group and what a lot of them do is buy one of those small chest freezers then rip out the thermostat and replace it with an electronic one that they can set the temperature on.
Omega Controls is a great company I have dealt with.

Ok. Heres your answer.

I have used a large chest freezer to sell fresh seafood from. We have ours rigged in a van for deliverys(running off a power inverter). I used a temperture controller from johnson controls. It works great and it doesnt need to be hard wired. it runs about 50 or 80 bucks.

the cheap way to do it is a hard wired temperature controller.(its chinese but works good). Check amazon for both. mainly used to control beer fermentation for homebrewers.

I would stick with a deep "Chest" type Freezer for 3 reasons.
1. they tend to use far less energy than a stand up fridge and dont cycle on or of as often.
2. Cold air sinks so opening and closing you wont lose nearly the cold air that you would on a stand up fridge.
3. THEY ARE CHEAP. New and used.

FBB, as I stated above I pulled the thermostat out of a older fridge and used it to turn a 7cf freezer into a fridge and it worked good----if you want something simple---just go get a few dollar timer that you plug into the wall and plug the freezer into---get one with atleast 30 minute intervals---set it where the freezer will run 30 minutes and off 1 hr and see how the temp inside does---if needed adjust the intervals longer or shorter to get the temp range you want. Those timers are less than $10.

Thanks guys. I went to the sale Sat. Sold 12 doz eggs. $2.00 a doz, but had to pay 5 commission. Im looking for other sales.
Saw a lot of those small freezers. Went between $35 and $50. Saw an slide top cooler. I ran it to $50, and dropped out. it went for $60. Quit cause I knew there were 2 side door coolers next to it that I thought would be cheaper. They were brand new, still in the box. One went for $90, the other for $85, so I didn't get anything.
