There was other stuff too, but I didn't have much interest in the other stuff. If I could get successful apples, pears, peaches, elderberries, blueberries, goji berries, strawberries, almonds, pecans, and walnuts I would be stoked!
If you don't protect them, the deer will thank you for the tasty snacks.

Definitely get advice from both extension service and locals on what to plant. There are diseases and pests that affect some varieties more than others, and "rules" like not mixing apples and cedar, etc..

Glad to note that you are one of the smart folks who did homework before signing!

I doubt that I will ever see deer on this property. The entire property is wide open and flat. They have nowhere to sneak in and nowhere to hide.

Also, I don't think that they would stick around after the dogs got into them. With my luck the dogs would probably guard them like they were just more sheep LOL.

Not that I know of.

I gave the missus about $700,000 to go away in 2012. She loved money, so it was a great deal for both of us.

First you say your not going to farm, then you say your going to plant some corn. Well, IF your going to raise a few pigs, I can tell you that 5 acres of corn aint gonna go to alful far for raising a few hogs, or sheep. IF your going to just put in what you can with a tiller or whatever, you might just as well save your time and tiller and buy what youll need.

Bill, my goal is to find a balance that I can accomplish with my hands. That is all. I will do what I can. It will be trial and error and I will do my best.

I am going to plant some corn...like a small patch or corn. Just like I plan on planting gardens. Just like I plan on having potatoes and other things.

I'm going to do what I can Bill. That's all. I just don't have the desire to run a tractor through tilling the same piece of dirt four times a year and cutting hay and all that noise.

To each their own. This will be more of a hobby/permaculture/homestead/happiness. I'm not going to pigeonhole it.

James, I hope that I am here in a year too. I have been planning this for many years.

I have done so much typing over the last decade that I think that I can probably type just about as fast as a human being can type. I also took classical guitar lessons for nine years, so my hands and fingers are like laser guided missiles moving at the speed of light LOL.

I'm glad that I enjoy typing, because I can't even listen to classical music anymore LOL. If I hear it out someplace I leave. If it comes on the TV or radio I turn it off or change the station.

I worked in the business world for a long time. You see my handle here. I have been getting pushed in this direction for a while now. Little shoves here and there. Little signs. I know that where I am going is the right place.

Its going to be hard, but it will be a testament to the glory of God and a testament to what a man can accomplish when he does what He wants

I was having some truck trouble on Monday. I felt like there was someplace that I needed to be so I went, seven miles each way...with my feet LOL. My shins are not feeling so great today, but I'm happy I did it.

When you throw what you want out the window and try to do what He wants you get so much more out of life.

So, to make a long answer short. I don't worry about my nubbins LOL. I'm not trying to build an ark or anything. LOL.

You'll do what you want but if it were my land I would leave the house where it is..and put in a whole lot of fruit and nut trees and bushes around the property lines to give me some shade, moisture holding and privacy..I'd keep the low shed for a chicken coop or a goat or other shelter..for animals..and I would likely put a garage or car port between the house and the road (at least in our area as we have to plow)..our garage is close to our road.

I would likely plant some food forests around the baby fruit and nut trees and bushes and do a lot of mulching of beds..if I was going to have animals that would be required to be fenced I would get the fences in asap and plant where fences aren't.

If you're looking for a Christian farm girl, hit your local farmer's market. Meet your neighbors, join the small community church, get to know the large animal vet (he knows every Ellie May kind of girl in the county) and if all else fails, check out For Farmers Only. But you know when you find her, she's going to want the house right in the middle!

Farmers only might as well be called something else entirely. I went on about six dates with different girls from that website and all of them tried to sleep with me on the first date. I'm not trying to say that I'm anything special. I just tend to think that girls I meet online tend to be hos. LOL.

I have decided to leave the mobile home where it is and build something else where I want it. On completion of that build, the mobile home will go down the road to go live one someone else property.

The gas heat, gas appliances, gas fireplace, and all of that have made it very undesirable for me. I will live in it until I am done building and after that I will sell it. That makes like a lot easier LOL.

Oh, and the best thing about being me is that when I find the right girl she will be submissive to me. If she isn't then she isn't the right girl. So, she will like the house wherever I put it LOL. I am very good to a woman, but I can't be with a girl who tries to wear the pants in any fashion. If she does, she goes down the road. That is my personality and there is someone out there who will be a perfect match for me. I will wait for perfect. I settled on un-perfect/super-model the first time around and it was very expensive LOL.

Congratulations!! I like the house in the middle because you have a buffer all around you. I wouldn't move it or change anything especially not for a year, once you experience your property in all seasons you may have different ideas. It is beautiful btw.

Does the land have a slope at all? Something to keep in mind if you do move the water and septic.

See what the utility company says about moving the poles, there are only three, which really isn't bad. If you can go underground it is better, less chance of downed lines causing injury.

Great choice, good luck!

There is slope to the land.

I will move the well and septic when I build a new home. Well move may not be the right word. The septic will get scrapped and a new one will be installed. The well will probably be scrapped as well and a new well will be put in. I don't have any desire to look at a well house in the middle of my pasture.

Once I get this place just how I like it, I will probably be moving on the a place about 20 times this size LOL.

It seems you have all the answers yourself, so I am curious why you are even asking for advice?

The place seems perfectly situated for three paddocks, two larger ones down each side of the house and a smaller one in between out back with gates to each and gates in between. I can't see any good reason to shove a house in the corner and have one bigger pasture.

But then I'm just a woman who wears pants and has ideas

There will be one perimeter fence and it will be divided into dozens of little paddocks with temporary fencing for moving grazing animals daily. Having a large rectangular perimeter fence makes the place look nicer in my opinion and also saves me about 700' of posts, braces, wire, etc. That is why I wanted to have one large rectangular perimeter fence.

The house would go in the corner because that is what I like and also because it is not optimally oriented for installing photo voltaic solar on the roof. In the northern hemisphere your solar panels should face south. In the home's current position, the solar panels would not be facing south. So, that is less than ideal.

Its fine that you are a woman that loves pants and coming up with ideas. I applaud you. I am sure that there are plenty of guys/gals out there that would love to find a woman just like you. I'm sorry that you took offense to my wish list for a bride LOL. I just know what I like and you guessed it, there is someone out there for everyone!

I'm sure that you will be happy to know that it will probably be too much trouble to do what I want, so you have scored an internet argument victory for women who love pants and have ideas all around the globe LOL. Hahahaha.

I hope you found this just as funny as I did. I really don't care about your clothing preference (although I think you missed what I meant about "wearing the pants") and you having ideas LOL. I just know what works for me in my house and what doesn't.

This is the reason why they make more than one different kind of ice cream. LOL.

This place will be better than paying rent, and when its all said and done I will probably give it to my brother when I move on to something that I like better. There are no problems without answers
