Not only can be, they are. And all the companies played follow the leader with same stupid design. I havent seen one cheap refrigerator from 90s up that didnt do the design with the little 50cent fan blowing air from freezer compartment to the refrigerator compartment. The fan rusts up and you have continuously running compressor, super cold freezer, but warm refrigerator. I fixed friends Hot Point in their vacation house with this wonderful design, adapted fan from cheap space heater he had setting around (rather than drive to town and buy the OEM $50 part). It worked, refrigerator cooled down again, but the compressor had been abused to point it was really noisy. Friends brother gave him another clone that seemed better, but they woke up to smoke throughout the house. Yeppers it was the replacement fridge so they put the noisy one back. Finally they bought a brand new clone of those two. Well there simply isnt a cheap alternative to this stupid design anymore. They are not kind people going to be unique and make a kegerator fridge out of a freezer.

Ok, found a GE 10.6 cube chest freezer, energy star, on sale at Lowes for $350. Uses like 218 kwh per year. Energy label estimates $26 per year (only useful as a comparison to other refrigerators/freezers, not actual useage). Majority good reviews on it. 3 wire baskets included. The cheaper freezers tend to have only one plastic basket. Sounds like good prospect for making a kegerator chest refrigerator. Used as a refrigerator, take significantly less electric since only has to maintain 40F not 0F. And since compressor would run less, should last longer.

I need to just empty little chest freezer I have now and buy one of the conversion thermostats and experiment. See how I like living with chest refrigerator. Yes I know it wont be as handy as an upright regular design refrigerator. And can put the kill a watt meter on it to see kind electric it uses as a refrigerator.

If you put it on a stand, maybe a foot tall or so, it might be easier to get stuff in and out of. Less bending over.

Just a thought.

I'll be curious to see how you like it.
