Jeesh, looks like all the preppers on this forum have moved to town......here in Michigan, we just deal with what we get and open another quart of tomato juice to have with venison in the crock pot. Ever hear of snowshoes?

It went from a dusting, to 2", to 3 to 4", to 5" Plus, to 6" or 7", to the 8" we got from 12 hours before it started here in Virginia.
I told my daughter yesterday evening that I was going to out smart it this time.
I got the rake and push broom out and swept the steps and side walk and the snow was so cold I swept the yard all the way to the road and a large landing area so my wife can get off the bus and not bust the buns coming home from work.
We don't drive in the snow because I don't trust other drivers period. While I haven't caused a wreak since my teenage years, I have been in several because of people that can not drive in snow and/or ice.
There was about 1 1/2" of snow the first time I swept the YARD, and about the same the next five times. I haven't went out to sweep this morning because I am "A Widdle Bit Too Sore" this morning but I am heading out in a few.
Next time we have a "Dusting," I will fold a few tarps and lay them down the driveway to dump a bit easier.

I know, I sound like I am crying about spilled milk. And I am. Sorry. Hope and pray that all of you that had it a heck of a lot harder than we did are doing OK!
Actually our yard looks pretty and I am sure that there are many out there that are in life threatening situations and please know we are praying for you all.

Godspeed

Dennis

I don't know about where you are but Norfolk has an excuse. We had a 3" snow while I was there and the place shut down for 3 days.I just hadn't considered that they have no snow removal equipment! And yes, people that aren't used to driving in snow and ice are smart to stay off the road if possible. It's always someone else that will get you in trouble it seems.

my office has been closed now two days. schools here are closed through Friday! picture taken yesterday just as the snow started coming down--that is DH sledding followed by DD and our LGD Mike (guess he thought they were sheep wondering away from the barn!). today was sunny but way below freezing, and a little more snow on schedule for tonight. by Friday-upper 40s with rain. we are enjoying the winter wonderland that we get every five years or so!

We have had 86.5 inches of snow this season and we are still below our average snowfall. The past few days have been brutally cold but sunny. Other than taking care of the poultry, I haven't set foot outside. Thank goodness for a well-stocked pantry!

I'm starting to catch onto meteorologist terminology and it's only taken me a half century. Light flurries actually means a half foot or better. Skiff of snow actually means a half foot of snow or better, 40% chance of snow is about a promise of at least a half foot of snow, a slight chance of precipitation is a half inch of rain forming ice under a half foot of snow, a straight out forecast of snow means, hang onto your hat, you have feet of white misery to deal with.

At this time of year, I feel it may be best to start sacrificing groundhogs and meteorologists regularly until we can appease whoever it takes and the white misery is replaced by green grass.

Some would say you are just too sorry to get out there! I would say you are just too smart!

Our weather certainly is not normal.

We watch the satellite reports on TV to see where the jet stream is headed and what clouds and storm fronts are in our vicinity but we never listen to temperature or precipitation predictions from weather reports because they are just predicting generalizations for the area. What is happening in your back yard may be a totally different weather event then what is happening just a little way down the road or even in your neighbour's field. A forecast for snow may not hit you but it will hit just above you.

We bought a remote sensing thermometer (censor is outside, thermometer is inside) and it gives us extremely accurate temperature and pressure readings for our immediate area.

For a long range forecast (like what the winter or summer will be like) we listen to our local First Nations elders. They are excellent at reading nature (always right) but they are surprised at how abnormal we have become over the past 15 years.

I would just soon have snow and cold where it belongs. December and January.
