just an idea...

Has she put up a sign about adopting at the local farm stores? I have this good friend who will only adopt "needy" cats for her farm. It is quite fun to go there to visit. She has 3 legged, one eyed,...you get the picture. They are VERY well cared for and happy farm cats that no one else wanted. I really wish her luck...that's a load of cats!

Well Nomad as a beastie person myself caregiver to my cast of furries & feathered.. I can sympathize with Your Cat Lady's dilemma... I too would go through hell and highwater to get my crew through safely and alive.. I might post this thread on all forums here and see if some beastie liking (Okie's ) might come onboard to help caravan these cats to their new home.. there has always been lots of generosity on these boards from the folks maybe the Cosmos will be friendly... and some may come on board... hey maybe a trucker reads these boards that may have some input as well..

Just some thoughts... Thanks for BEing the KINDHEARTED Beastie NOMAD You are... I hope a HUGE deposit is made into Your Grace bank account for this good deed..

Nomad, try this link. It's a yahoo group(one of many) that works with cat rescue & also arranges transportation from point A to point B.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Cat_Do...ortation_List/

You can type in cat transport in yahoo and a few pages of transport groups pops up.

I've never been involved in the cat transport but the yahoo groups for dog transporters which I'm involved with are all good hearted, animal loving people. Hopefully, the cat folks are just as nice.

Best of Luck to both this lady with the kind heart and you.

Fill empty water bottles 3/4 full with water then freeze. Add these to cages just before trip and it will help keep them cool. I would put shade cloth over pick up bed to shade cats.

DW: This area is about all city. I wouldn't know where to find a farm store. I'm afraid the poor lady is just about in a stage of mental melt down. It's all happening so fast for her. She just lost her husband a few weeks ago and now she's leaving the only home they ever owned. My wife and I are the only ones in the area able to help her. Her relatives all live far away, so she is just overwhelmed by it all. It is just so sad.

KC: Thanks for the kind words. I am an animal lover and find them to be better company than many people I come across. I sense from what I read in many posts on these boards that there are a lot of good people scattered hither and yon. I am thankful to be able to learn from them.

Kathy: Thanks loads for the link. I made a plea on the board, I hope I did it right. I'll check some other groups as soon as I can.

Kathy H: I am trying to discourage the use of the pickup. I think it would traumatize the poor fuzzy creatures. It's such a long drive with the wind whistling in their little ears.

Thanks to all who have responded with their ideas. I either have or will pass along all of them. My feeling is that things generally work out the way they are supposed to in the end. I'm sure that in a week or so all the furry little creatures will be relocated and I'll wonder why I was so worried.

Thanks again,

Nomad

How about talking to some truckers and seeing if any would be willing to transport a few kitties in the CAB of the truck with them? You could offer them the "cuties", the kittens everybody wants to cuddle and hug on... And maybe find homes for a few.
There is a group of pilots that fly people needing medical care (for the life of me I can't think of their name) If any of them were making a return trip with no patients, maybe they would be willing to take a few cats.
You might try the local Petsmart --- they seem to be linked into the animal rescue groups...
My heart goes out to your friend.

If she can't afford cat tranquilizers (and with that many cats, it's doubtful she can), I'd really advise she get valerian extract and put a few drops in theur water. The cats will make the move much more safely and easily if they're relaxed - and valerian will do that.

Just a thought, but there's a HUGE no-kill animal shelter in Utah called Best Friends. I think it might be one of the biggest in the country. I think website is www.bestfriends.com. I'm not suggesting the cats go to the shelter - but this organization seems to be well connected all over the country and might have a network in your area that could help with the transport of the cats. I get their newsletter and I've heard of things like this (granted, with a lot less animals) being helped with before.

Best Friends Animal Society
5001 Angel Canyon Road
Kanab, UT 84741-5001
Phone: (435) 644-2001

Please, please keep us posted. Thank you for caring about the cats.

Where this woman is moving to in NC................do they know she is bringing 62 sick, unadoptable cats with her? I hope she is going to a home she already owns because she sure won't find anyone to rent to her. Is she thinking 2 steps ahead????

She was given an acre of land in the country by a relative and will have a building with AC and heat just for the animals. There is also a fully enclosed run being made so they can go outside if they want. This is all being done by family; she is penniless which is one reason why I'm trying to help her. She does take excellent care of the cats. She has them all neutered and provides medicines for the ones that require it. She has dedicated her life to rescuing all animals that need it. I know she has collector's syndrome, but there is nothing anyone including her children can say that will sway her from what she does. She would literally go without the basic necessities of life to provide for her animals. I don't agree with it nor do I know anyone else who does, but she is not to be swayed. They had a fire in their house a year or so ago. She wouldn't leave until every cat was accounted for. The firemen were at their wits end, but unless they would have carried her out bodily she wasn't going. Job has nothing on the trials this poor woman has had to endure in the last couple of years. She is in her early 50's, and her husband did everything for her. She has few job skills and has never had a driver's license. But she has been a friend of my wife forever, so I am doing what I can to help her. You're preaching to the choir when you question her thought process. I just pray that everything works out and has a happy ending. As fragile as her mind is right now, I'm afraid that if she lost those animals she would do harm to herself. I think I'll refrain from adding any more to this thread for now. I want to thank everyone for their input and I will post again after the move and report on the outcome. Please everyone keep your fingers crossed.

Thanks,

Nomad

transport

I'm going to check with a few friends, I'll probably get nowhere, but it doesn't hurt to ask. I'm from Akron, and all of my friends are still there. They are good people and a couple have stock trailers. No promises.

Nomad, you said the Akron area? I'm familiar with the areas south and southeast of Akron. If you head down to the Orrville, Wooster area you start getting into the farms where there are a lot of Amish. An example is the little town of Kidron, just south of Orrville. She may be able to advertise for some to go to farms in those areas. Just a thought. Susan

Aren't there small (but no doubt adequate for this purpose) "camping" air conditioners that run off of the cigarette lighter while the vehicle is running? Surely one of those (with an adapter cord running even out the side window and back to the trailer, if you had to) would be sufficient to cool a good-sized hauling truck. Maybe someone with RV experience would know where to find one.
