40 years ago DH and I (22 at the time) wanted to homestead. DH was between jobs, went in on 20 acres with others, planned a small log cabin. Short version: lived in 2 tents with 2 toddlers for the summer, didn't hardly get the house started, rented in town, only part time work (if any work available), threw in the towel after 2 years. Fast forward 40 years: 40 acres w/well (also 5 hours away and totally off grid), 2 years left on the mortgage, have most of the materials out to the property, DH works his last day early April, and we are GONE! Again living in tents until we have the house closed in, but we will have enough income to get by.
We have been going over for 3 to 9 days at a time, taking materials and going ground work. What we do on, and for, the homestead is our playtime, lol.
Maybe push out you "move in" date, take a few days of vacation time now and again to play and recharge and you can still have your dream. It will be worth it!
