I am so confused by your weather, Bill. I am in SE Virginia and no one is doing anything here yet. I would have assumed you are much colder than we are??? Are you actually planting?

Welcome to our desert garden! A yo-yo. Saturday it was 65F, Sunday it was 70F and sunny and clear. The fruit trees and roses think it's time to wake up, but NO oh no, not yet dear ones.

We will still get a cold snap, or three, and since we have not had late spring frosts for 2 years in a row (resulting by the way in fruit for the first time from peach, apricot and nectarine), I am thinking we will this year. So it will get to overnight lows of anywhere between 10-25F. No point planting anything here yet. Often, we don't really get most things into the ground (except for peas), until April.

I would love to do a no-till but DH loves his tractor too much. It's pure joy for him to plow up the garden and I wouldn't take that from him. He works so very hard, plus the 2-hour a day commute. He deserves to play with that tractor on the weekends.

Our garden is lying there just waiting for us to use the tiller again. It's blanket of rotten alfalfa and cow manure hiding it's explosive growing power! Sounds good, don't it? Can't wait!!!

I got two of my raised beds layered today. First time gardening!

1. Newspaper/cardboard
2. Peat humus
3. Leaves
4. Manure/Compost mix
5. Leaves
6. Potting soil

I watered the leaves down between layers because they were cracklin' dry. Covered beds in black garden sheeting and anticipate planting my seedling sprouts in late April.

Please feel free to point out any mistakes I've made here before I start layering the other 2 beds tomorrow. SO NERVOUS!!

Thanks in advance :-)

I'm in Arkansas, Ozarks area. It was 60° today!
