The only time we got a vacation was when we cleared the house out & was waiting for the new flock to come in. Usually only a few days or a week at most.
My Dad used to threaten to buy 19,000 corks LOL. We got six weeks in between flocks and my brother who lives in Atlanta would come down and my other brother who lived close by would help Dad clean the litter out, power wash the cages and get everything ready for the new flock. We usually then had about two weeks to take a vacation and boy howdy, we did some good ones.

Here in Mississippi, all Dad had to do was put down the curtains but, that water trough situation got to be a pain because 300 foot long ice is not good. Right after the pics were taken, he had watering cups put in, the hen pecked the little white lever and the cup filled with about a tablespoon of water. So much better!

How often did ya'll pick up? We did three a day.

My dad eventually put in automatic feeders & also the cup waterers. I thought it was cool that they were smart enough to peck that white lever to get the water to come out. We gathered eggs late morning & then again at 5:00. The last few years he had automatic gatherers that would bring the eggs to the ends of the rows & we would just have to stand there & collect them. I liked that because I could have the radio on while doing it. He actually designed & built a conveyor type system that brought all 4 rows to the center of the building. It was pretty cool actually. I think it was 1988 when he finally got out of the business & started up the sawmill company that he has now with my brothers. I wish my kids could have seen the set up.

Sounds like things were much better 40 years ago than they are today, for the hens at least.
