Hehe, thanks Gaz, yep I was posting on permies and here to hopefully get more info overall

Thanks VA, we did have some issues with homeschooling in WV. My wife was finally able to work around some issues and get things going smoothly. I did notice that there wasn't much land going with the mineral rights when I was looking in WV actively in the past. We haven't looked at western part of VA yet, so I'll take a look at some land there. Do you think composting toilets, strawbale housing, or the like would cause any issues in the area where you are?

The colder climate and amount of snow has been a concern for us while looking at the NH region. A possible workaround that we've seen suggested is to look at Walipini Greenhouses to try to extend the growing season. We would also have to have the animals closer to the house so we wouldn't have to dig too much snow too often

Gila, yeah that's true, with a shallow well there isn't very much filtering being done. Hmm, I will check the free geospatial data again. I think I saw a feature file that had some springs listed. That would be great to have a reliable spring on the property. If the filtered cisterns worked well, then that seems like it would be an option for the New England areas thanks to the high precipitation that they get?

We have a handug shallow well in Maine...and it works great, as we get a lot of precipitation to keep her fullest all year around.

The issue is more the the water needs to be tested regularly and occasionally treated for acid ( throw in crushed limestone) or a well which or microbes...

You also need to be more careful of activities that happen around the well, as it would be easy to polute.

Well I spent many years in NH. That would not be my first choice. It's a tough place to do what you want to do. Personally I chose Tn. Prices are good but on the rise. I bought my land like 7 years a go. Great growing season, not bad at all on the livestock. I guess is all a personal choice. I could not wait to leave the area. I love Tn and enjoy the freedom. I'm for the most part self-sufficient. Check out my homestead HERE it may give you some ideas.
