I would love to do the hunting, fishing, gathering type of work. But I don't want to break the bank doing it also. I would love to find someone willing to have me work with them in exchange for a room. Is this still doable in AK? and for a middle aged woman?

Well, yes

One way is to contact diamond m ranch they have a site and advertise for such people.

The there is the people who make use of rvs and contact local schools to camp there....stops vandalism at schools during the summers.

Or state camp hosts....

Years ago I worked at a fish cannery on Bristol Bay, that needed a caretaker each winter, to watch over the site and boat sheds.
It would take a special somebody to do that job!
I too would recommend the Matanuska/Susitna Valleys for a newcomer.
I live up towards Talkeetna and find it a good mixture of civilization and wilderness.

One post Ghost...I like it !!

Sorry if I haven't responded to this thread..for me it's Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.
All answers and replies have been outstanding. This has been great and well worth the time to join HomesteadingToday. The collective group has allowed me to actually realize a bigger picture of what and how I need to go about my journey to Alaska. Thanks to all. It's also pretty cool to see how ya'll care about your state, there's a lot of Alaska pride in these post and I respect that. The old OP with a one post ghost. Classic.
