Back when I was a youngun, seems like the early to mid 60s, there was an ad on tv that showed a man that looked like an eastern european from the dress. he had gotten a care package of some kind that included a spade and was digging a garden and feeling of the soil with great reverance. Don't remember the program it was pushing, but remember the message, give someone in need the basic tools and seed to grow their own food, that has stuck with me all through the years.
