Glasses or Contacts
Which do all of you homesteaders favor when living a homestead life?
|
Glasses, I can't handle touching my eye. Secondly, I can read without glasses but only need them to see far, I'm not sure how contacts would work in that case.
|
I've worn safety glasses for decades as my eye wear. They're not exactly in fashion but I want the eye protection. They've come in handy several times.
|
If I had to wear glasses ( had Lasix done ) I would go with glasses with a spare in case shoomer hit.
|
Glasses for me too, although I'm always setting them down somewhere and forgetting them. I only need them for close up stuff. No way could I put in contacts. Couldn't stand to touch my eyes.

I wouldn't take care of contacts good enough and don't want anyone cutting my eyes up. Peg |
For the most part contacts win the contest when it comes to working around the place.
Glasses are a pain in the rear a lot of the times when you are working. They get knocked askew and even completely off by critters, limbs and other things. They have a habit of getting broken by those same critters, limbs and other things. In the summer sweat drips onto the lenses when you bend over. In the winter they fog up. When it rains you wind up trying to find a dry spot to look through. As for those who think they could 'never' wear contacts the wife thought the same thing. But now she loves not having to wear her glasses when she is working. |
I wore contacts for years, and now that I am older, I switched to glasses. I really miss my contacts as I never had to worry about losing, breaking, or forgetting where they were.
|
I got glasses at age 8, and contacts at age 13. Was blind as a bat without them. Finally got LASIK after over 30 years in lenses. Would have gone insane if I had to wear glasses for all those years... :yuck:
|
I also have pretty crappy vision 750/20 and wear glasses since age 12 or so. Wore contacts while a police officer and when dating (men don't make passes at gals who wear glasses and all that). Hated contacts and actually had them fuse to my eyes on an industrial fire call (hydrogen sulfide gas got me). I have thought for years about Lasix and actually have the funds to do it now but I am not planning it anytime soon. I would still need reading glasses anyway.
|
I wear glasses, I have dry eye problems, drops and fish oil has helped over time. I have talked to my eye doctor because I have heard you can wear contacts with this problem but she says best not. I need them to read and on this cell phone but I wear them all the time, special, laser ground progressives. They ARE a pain, inside outside fog up, fall off, sweat, etc.
DS needed glasses at 4, he wanted contacts and the doctor thought they were best if he could do it (he hated his glasses) He did so well, even at that age. He wore them for 6 years and then didn't need them. He needed them to get both eyes to work together (lazy eye). He has perfect eye sight, even today at 36....James |
I wear my glasses mostly except when I am playing hockey or football. I am always having things bounce off of my glasses while working.
|
Glasses here, both wife and myself, neither of us have really considered contacts.
Wife said contacts would be to much like work.:yuck: |
Both.
Glasses to let your eyes breathe/for middle of the night stuff. Contacts for all the stuff you'd like to do without a cloud in front of your face. |
prefer glasses
I prefer glasses. I've known many people who've damaged their eyes from improper usage of contacts and in general I don't really think putting plastic discs on eyes is really a good idea anyway. I'd love to fix my eyes, but for now I'll wear my glasses. They also do provide some protection against foreign objects hitting your eyes! I just bought a prescription snorkel mask to use on vacation. I'll finally be able to see while snorkeling.

contacts! I've worn multi-focal(bi focals), extended wear contacts for years and love not having to mess with them.
|
Contacts!!
|
Well, I was just curious. I have worn contacts for years but last fall after starting our house and farm I ran out of lenses and I HATE going to eye Dr. I started wearing glasses and have gotten use to them again but am thinking about getting contacts back. Don't know how they will do with hay, grinding feed, and farm life we have now.
|
Outside of two issues, once in a horse show where my contact folded in half and I went through the whole class with one eye screwed shut, and one time when I went camping and forgot my lens case and couldn't clean or take them off for 4 days, I preferred contacts. No fogging up or rained on, no having them knocked off by an uncooperative animal. And the joy of taking a shower and still being able to see......
But my eyes gradually got worse and the correction was too much for contacts. I will say glasses are much cheaper due to long periods before needing new ones and I suppose safer. At least I console myself with that idea. |
I have been thinking about the safeness of glasses too. I have worn them (contacts) for years but all the sudden I feel they are bad for my eyes for some reason. haha
|
Glasses!
And if you buy them from a place like Zenni Optical online, they cost a fraction of what buying them from an eyeglasses store costs. A pair that would have cost me $400 cost me $42. That way you can have spares with no worries! |
I own a sawmill and live on a farm. Contacts allow me to wear safety glasses, or safety sunglasses. They don't fall of when you crawl under something.
|
Had contact in my 20's, but at age 55 tried them again, so looking forward to them.
What a nightmare! Only certain distances focusing when driving, watching tv etc. plus constantly reaching for reading glasses, even to look at the cell phone. My near vision and contrast is so bad, putting lenses in or taking out was an ordeal. It was difficult to tell if the lens was over my cornea or had slipped off into an eyelid. Was so disappointment since I hate wearing glasses. Now have $100 worth of lenses just sitting there. |
Glasses, but keep a couple extra screws around and a small driver kit. Tried contacts, no thanks. I couldn't get used to them or the problems I had with and while wearing them.
That said, save up and get lazerized. I still kick myself for waiting(scared) as long as I did. Not sure how long now but better than 10 years. I can still see better than I could with either contacts or glasses. It will be the best thing ever if you are saddled with corrective lenses. I still wear safety eye coverings of some sort regularly. Owl |
My daughter wore glasses from middle school ON... She could not WAIT to turn 18, when I told her I would go for contacts. She tried them for a year, and decided she preferred glasses.
There is so much maintenance to Contacts... Clean hands, little pots, cleaner and saline. And even though she had 30-day wears, she didn't like sleeping with them as they felt "odd" every morning... (Eyes slightly ajar when asleep?) I don't wear but cheaters, and after watching all the HooDoo she had to Do - I will stick with Add-Ons that I can easily control when my time comes. |
I tried contacts. They were nice in damp weather (no rain spots/fog on the glasses) but when the humidity was low, I had major issues with them. I have fairly dry eyes. They itched, and they had a tendency to pop out when I blinked. I had one pop out when I was driving, and I decided glasses were safer. They were also a pain to get in as I couldn't actually see what I was doing while inserting them! (My vision is around 400/20 and 650/20 depending on the eye, and I have severe astigmatism and double vision.)
I'm not a candidate for lasik, unfortunately. |

I like contacts best. I started wearing glasses in the second grade and cant tell you how many pairs I broke as a kid. With contacts if you lose or tear one just break out a new package! Also, my glasses were always smudged and dirty. I got contact lenses when I was about 20 and never looked back. I think my vision is better with them. I do have a pair of glasses that I wear on my way to and from bed, but that's it.
|
I have had both, but now wear only glasses. Partly because now I am older it is impossible to get a contact that covers my full range of vision and my astigmatism. Partly because it seems to me that every bit of dust that is on the road or in the field will find my contacts to lodge behind.

I wore contacts for decades.
But as I got older they just seemed to be more and more trouble. What with dirt and wind and reading glasses, it just wasn't worth the trouble. Glasses are a pain, but seeing is a good thing. |
I've worn both hard and soft contacts since the 70's. Had lasik surgery in January 2012. I don't know why I wanted so long, lasik is wonderful. A bit of information for those who have had lasik or going to. Get your doctor to give you a copy of your "pre surgery calculations measurements". If you have to have cataract surgery in the future these measurements will be most valuable. Your surgeon only has to keep the records for seven years.

I have worn glasses for about 15 years and have never tried contacts, for the reason a lot of people here seem to indicate--don't want to touch my eyes. The down side of glasses when working outside for me is that I sweat into them a lot and things get blurry. So it's a pain to keep them clean. Also, I've always worn metal frames, which stay on pretty well, but the last go around I got plastic frames, which are terrible when it's hot and I'm sweating. They slip all over the place. Good luck.
|
I can't even put eye drops in my own eyes...how am I gonna put a piece of PLASTIC in there!
Seriously, though, I have scarring on both of my corneas (the stupid, younger me thought she was bullet-proof and didn't wear safety glasses when she should have!)...if I even rub my eye the wrong way, it hurts like crazy. No contacts here. |
Too lazy for contacts myself. Heck I'm too lazy to wear glasses. They prescribed reading glasses to me years ago and after forgetting them all the time (and finding my ex husband to be the source of my migraines) I figured I'll just leave it until I need them all the time.
Yeah, lazy... |
I can still see medium to far distance just fine. Only use Dollar Tree cheepo reading glasses for typing out this reply and similar such.
|
As people have indicated, there are pros and cons to both. I wore glasses for many years. But as my eyes got worse over the years, my prescription got stronger and stronger and the weight of my glasses got heavier and heavier, often hurting my nose and ears. So I eventually swithched to contacts. It took a couple months to get used to putting them in and taking them out... but they are more comfortable and they never fog up on cold days.
|
Contacts ever since I first needed correction. I keep glasses to get to and from bed, in case of a fire, etc. I tried dailies but they are too thin. I wear 30's but take them out at night..
Husband wears glasses - he's one of those cant-stand-his-eyes-thouched types. Then he decided he wanted lasik, now he can wear safety glasses or sunglasses without fogging or forgetting. Ironically, lasik requires frequent use of eye drops so he had to learn to touch his eyes anyway. I'm not a lasik candidate because of a glaucoma risk, otherwise I'dve been right there with him. |
I despise wearing my glasses, but I frequently decide contacts are too darn expensive and switch to my glasses after I run out for the year. By the time I go back to the eye doctor, I'm desperate for my contacts again. I hate not seeing in the shower, and I often take my glasses off to put a sweater on or something of that ilk then can't see to find them again. I can't tell you how many times just this week I've had to rally my keen-eyed children to find my glasses when I took them off for one reason or another. Maybe my next frames should be some neon-glow color so that they stand out better? I have knocked them off my face countless times while working in the garden and have to call for help finding them.
P.S., can you tell it's almost time for my yearly eye exam and I've had beyond enough of wearing glasses? |

Glasses, I don't even like putting drops in my eye let alone my finger. Glasses may scratch but at least if they do, it was because something was going to fly into your eye anyway
