I usually order from Southern Exposure, Pinetree, and, on rare occasion, Baker Creek.

What gets me about almost every heirloom/OP operation is the wording in a LOT of their descriptions similar to "The 1902 insert-OLD-seed-company-name-here catalog said...blahblahblah...about this vegetable".

I could care less what folks back in 1902 thought about X strain of vegetable...what I want to know is how does the 2014 strain PERFORM.

Off ye olde soapbox...as you were.

Seed Saver's Exchange is my current favorite. Excellent germination rate, fantastic plants. I planted the garlic I received from them this fall... BIGGEST cloves I've ever seen.

On your recommendation, I'm going to go ahead and request a SSE catalog.

Thanks!

I think I like and have tried most of the above mentioned, and this year I bought From Patriot Supply. I don't think I will ever look back. Cheap, quality, good selection and quantity of seeds. Try them!

Fedco. They do their best to stock seeds that are not from Monsanto, etc. organizations and tell you where the seed is from, stress OG and OP and heirloom, have terrific descriptions, good prices, no postage if seed order is $30 or more, and the catalogue is just fun to read. It is printed on newsprint--no photos. So for pretty pictures, I like a glossy catalogue--but don't order from them. Pinetree is great, too. Then Johnney's for the in-depth instructions on planting. Catalogues are the best part of winter--purr.

Hippygirl, maybe those folks from the turn of the century could teach us a thing or two. Besides performance, which can be affected by so many variables, the history of the seed and who developed it and nurtured it is interesting to me. Also how a particular food item was regarded in another time helps develop perspective about that food today. I do agree if the vegetable or fruit doesn't do well for the grower the rest of the background information is useless.

I like Fedco seeds, but because they push their political views SO MUCH, will not do business with them anymore, shame because we spend a lot on seeds and such. Will go to Johnnys, (also in Maine), or SSE- need a northern seed company.
