Here is where what we have of the 'old' Homesteading Today, aka Countryside Magazine and related forums.

http://www.homesteadingtoday.com/arc...5&daysprune=-1

And I've been around since mid 1999. Found it from another site mention. On the old way, I didn't say much.

I like reading about everyone's homestead, cute critters, and I share with sewing a good bit.

I've watched Melissa's children grow up and become parents themselves. And seen Karen go from one big farm house to a smaller one to another change. And various outlooks on life.

And with Chuck having this place set up, and being a stockbroker, us previewing his "More Elite Soldier" to see if he should seek out a publisher. That was about the time this Homesteading Today happened. I remember helping out dailyjoy with Barter Board, and then I got Plant and ID forum. Karen was going out for some medical and I offered to help her with "Cooking and Crafts" forum that became Countryside Homemaking forums.

I ended up as a super mod as one night I called Chuck at 3 am cause a member has called me. There was a very big and bad porn type spam in this forum and it had to be off NOW. He got it off and decided to let me be able to do clean up of those things.

Then he was off doing the Afghanistan embedded reporting and the forum didn't have some admin stuff being done, so I ended up helping there.

So, I hang around cause I really like 99% of the people and the other 1% I like most of the time, and other times don't. I keep dreaming of a bit of land with a cabin and a BIG front porch.

And I like not having spammers on a board I love.

I've been thru all the changes with the rest of the admin/mods/old time members. Heck, we even withstood being off line for a month in 2009, but we stayed together in a way, and once the new server service was up and running (thanks Chuck and Kung) we all came back home.

That's why I'm here.

Wade, you know, I am pretty well married to this forum. And we both know what happens in a marriage. Time either stands still, or moves along rapidly...

Been here since just after getting Electricity and a Computer. We was farming back in the Hills of the Ozarks. Went to many get together.

Get along like family, get POed take break and come back. No longer have our Farm, just too hard getting in and out. But still have Rabbits, Chickens and Garden.

Y'all got some pretty interesting things to say! I'm glad I started this thread. Anyway, now I guess it's "confession time" in a way.
A Few days back my wife came downstairs And I was on this sight. She ask just what I get out of this as I really limit my communication with most of the world. I told her at the time how I loved getting and giving info etc. but that started me thinking. After mulling this over for a few days I realized what one of the big reasons is.
I know you can't tell from my posts but I am actually pretty shy. On top of that it seems when I am in a conversation I always leave out half of what I wanted to say. It's really frustrating!Being on here allows me the time to think through what I want to say and for the most part I can get my point across.I just can't do that in real life.I don't go into public much because I am just not comfortable around other people. I have my wife,3 sons,mother,2 of my brothers and one brother in law and one friend from the military that I actually talk to and that's it. When I get on this site it's like a whole world full of friends has been opened up to me.I enjoy the threads for learning and for helping others if I can and feel pretty close to a few members that I talk to on occasion and it's y'all that keeps me coming back for more.
So thanks a lot y'all.

Wade

I've been on since the Lucenet days. Have taken Countryside for many years. Even though we've been homesteading since 1974,times change and I so have I. I'm forty years older now and have had to learn a whole new way of doing things. Like to see a new generation coming along. If I can pass on any knowledge, great ,but I learn a lot too. New products, new ideas, new ways to be frugal etc. Never too old to try something new.

1shotwade, you asked a bunch of questions, so here 'tis...a bunch of answers (and something to make you smile, too)!

I've been a member 7 years, and a lurking non-member for some years before that. (So many forums, so little time!) Over the years, I've seen the normal ebb and flow that is typical of any large internet forum...some folks going, some staying, plenty coming in. Here's why I keep coming back:

Although I have embraced a self-sufficient lifestyle for decades, I am still here because it's a great place for me to continue learning, and to bounce ideas around some of the most knowledgeable homesteading folks I've ever met on the internet.

Also, I genuinely enjoy encouraging others and helping those who ask for advice. I am willing to share what I have learned in the school of hard knocks, and hope the information may be useful to someone traveling the same road...

Like so many others here, I am happy to help newbies, and never think of anyone as a “flash in the pan”, or a pain in the neck, or unworthy of help, no matter how “dumb” or silly the question may seem to the poster.

It never ceases to amaze me how so many different personalities can come together and function as a productive and progressive group. Almost a year ago I started a fun thread about the dynamics of HomesteadingToday. It was born in the SingleTree forum, but it applies to the whole site.

1shotwade, it also answers some of your questions, in a...very graphic (and funny) way, lol.

Pull up a chair, click and enjoy it: HomesteadingToday Dynamics

Just so you know, you don't have to be single to enjoy the SingleTree forum. Think of it as HomesteadingToday's answer to the old TV show Cheers. It's a hoot, f'sure. Everyone is welcome. Bring your mug.

Oh hey, almost forgot to tell you this: I am never, evah bored here! People pay big money to be entertained this well; we can enjoy it right here for free.

Speaking of free... I appreciate how there is no compulsory charge to be here. The price is right and these days, it's what many of us can afford, so I hope it stays that way.

No need to apologize!

lol, the sheer number of your helpful posts these past years more than qualifies you for the old fogies club.

I've been on here a long time, too, from the Lusenet days. I'm standoffish in general, but this place does have a homey feel.

I don't think it's changed that much. Yes, people come and go and the same kind of questions get asked, but it's almost always a different situation. "what do I do with this ten acres?" is different in OR, MI, MO, or NY, and the people who ask the questions have different work, family, etc. And if someone is having health problems with an animal that you know how to deal with, no matter how many times it gets asked, you can't sit on your hands for it.

Old Timer

I was on Lusenet site, too. And my most prized possession from here is Carla Emory's signed copy to me from testing. This is the only site I regularly check.

HT is fun. It really is my only outlet on the internet. I have been thinking a long time about a joke that Johnny Carson told when McDonalds still had the number of hamburgers served on their signs. It was in the millions or billions. Johnny added, "And there still on their first lb. of meat." (Rim Shot). That describes my posts. I post light hearted superficial things mostly so you could say that I have a certain number of posts since 2003, but I'm still on my first lb. of (Insert your description here). Not much of any substance. If someone needs a lift, I try to provide that. One could easily ask, what my post have to do with Homesteading? The answer is, not much.

I don't know what trail I was on that led me to this discovery. I liked it. I have enjoyed every poster. I know everyone will move on along their trail. I wonder about familiar names that do not return and wish them and all health, wealth and happiness. I cannot take any posts back. Nor will I get any days back since I have been here. Time on the trail is short. I remember also the feeling of making the first reply or post and I want everyone to feel welcome. Is it better to not post and have everyone think you are stupid then to post and prove it? Near and far...we are the same persons...mostly.

I hang around, for one reason, because I learn from the newbies, lol. I've done thing the way I've done things, so I don't search the web much for how to. Newbies show up with new ideas they found on the net that I never thought to look for

I've been here forever so long that I grew roots. Have seen ppl come and go. Or, get banned and come back as someone "new". Or, have multiple personalities. Nothing surprises me!

Yes,HT has changed through the years and life is a series of changes!

I'm not an old-timer, just a mid-timer (2004). I'm just an old country boy, whose friends and family still do some things the old-fashioned way. Occasionally, I have an opinion or too that may even be pertinent to the conversation.

Folks come and folks go, like any internet board. It's my observation that sometimes the brightest Truth is found in some of the most abrasive personalities, and I'd allow a bit more leeway, but it ain't my board. Rules are rules, and as long as they are enforced fairly (they usually are), all is good.

At the end of the day, I guess this board exists to fulfill its mission of friendly advice, one internet neighbor to another, without a lot of pretense. Or, it gives multiple insights and opinions on a single problem, allowing the original thread starter options he may not have thought about when posting his original thoughts.

After all, we're all just country folks, no matter where we may live. We're just trying to be neighborly.

Because I keep trying new things and therefore am always a newby at something and can use advice. Because I have simultaneously have a store of 'been there-done-that's' to offer in exchange.
Because there is hardly anywhere else where a funny story regarding hot wire is truly appreciated by so many.

..............Sometimes I'm here.........and sometimes I'm barely here ! Depending on which one of the 7 Deadly sins I've transgressed ! I have a bad habit of posting exactly what is on my mind at any given moment . I'm getting better at 'Posting' control though because I despise being Politically Correct . , fordy

What Hoosier forum? And what newbie stuff isn't interesting? How 'bout: "Can I grow one hundred pounds of potatoes in a stack of old tires? "What do I do about my neighbor's _________?" "How many goats do I need to clear ten acres of trashy woods?" "What seeds does Monsanto own?" "What is homesteading?"

Since my post count far outweighs my length of time here, I must be too brash and wordy. All I can say is, "Welcome to the forum, Wade!"
