Absolutely.
Most of the youth stuff out there today is chambered in the shorter cartridges such as .243, 7mm-08 or .308. The initial poster needs a decent, accurate weapon, without spending any more than is necessary.
I do not like a .243, especially for novice hunters. I'm an old J.E.B. Stuart fan, and I believe in "gettin' thar fustest with the mostest". The 7 or the .308 has more leeway when it comes to making a killing shot with less than optimal bullet placement, when considering the rifles we are looking at.
