IMO, the Jeeps fit more into the "fun" or "get me there through snow/mud" category. That 6 cylinder is a great engine, but if you'd like to tow or haul anything, most Jeeps are too small and light.

A Ford F series pickup with the 300c.i. inline 6 is just as tough (the "poor mans diesel"), extreme amount of torque, gets about the same poor gas mileage as the Jeep, but is probably a better utility type vehicle and is generally cheaper to insure. The Ford 300c.i. inline 6 was manufactured for what seems like forever... same engine found in things like forklifts, generators, compressors, etc.

I suppose it all depends on what you'll be using the vehicle for... to "toot" around in the muck and snow, the 6 cylinder Jeep would be an excellent choice.

cheers,

I have a 94 warangler it gets about 10 to 13 miles to gal not to good but with soft top it makes up for it . I've had to have tranny work and new clutch put in mine has 148,000 miles on it and has the 4.0 6 cly which I'd get over the 4 cly. It has plenty of power and lots to spare. The only problem with some of the older ones is they have leaf spring which makes for a ruff ride. The mid ninties modle are good and they won't tip over as most people think I've had mine around sharp corners at 60 plus with no problems. And I use to be on a fire dept and it was great to make runs in.And they heat up great it could be 13 degrees out and with the heater on you could sit in there with just a tea shirt and be comfy. Thats with a soft top. I'm going to sell mine soon as I put net drive shaft init and I havd a universal joint break about 3 weeks ago.And they can go where bigger trucks and stuff cans and they can trun on a dime if you ask me. Winter time I put a few bags of sand in back for a bit of weight you might find your self driving in 4x4 more when there is snow just due to them being so light in the ass end. And they can pull quite alot of weight. I used mine to pull atrailer with a mid size exavator on it with no problems. any more ?'s e-mail me P.s .go for the 20 gal tank I think the opps are 20 or 15 the saharea (sp) comes with 20 which that is what mine is and I bought mine wuth 94,000 miles on it and can resell it for bout 4500.00 to 5000.00.

Oh my goodness! Why such poor gas mileage? My Jeep is a 6 cylinder, and I get 20mpg bebopping around in the country, and on the highway I get 22mpg. Actually my old 4 cylinder got about the same gas mileage.

Anybody else ever get "death wobble". If you have you'll know it. You'll think the wheels are going to fall off! We have a 88 cherokee, been around the world a couple of times or two, DH lifted it a while back. Does get poor gas milage and oil leaks from everywhere but we keep duct taping it since we can't afford to get anything else. He love it and would keep pumping $ into it but she (Christine) does not like me...said so as she reved up on her own in an icy driveway and backed me all the way down into the creek! That being said I have always wanted a wrangler...but now the five of us don't fit. lol

If you get an old one, be sure to look for one with the straight 6 engine. I've got that engine in my '89 Jeep Comanche (pickup truck version of the Cherokee) and I love it. If they make it past 100k miles, they tend to run pretty much forever.

A '92 or later will have the improved cooling system, which you really want because that engine runs hot. I shouldn't have to say that you've gotta go for the 5 speed manual with it.

Jeeps are great. There are things that usually go wrong with each model in a given year. But most of those typical problems are easy to fix and there is a whole lot of information online about how to fix Jeeps. An old Jeep is something that is always going to get the job done, as far as off-roading is concerned. But it is also a vehicle for people who like to tinker. Be prepared to have a relationship with it.

Thumbs up

I own a 97' Jeep Cherokee Sport in Light Blue. I love it. I get about 20 miles to the gallon. It currently has over 266,000 miles (original engine ) on it and is still running like brand new. Some times it will stall if it has lest than 1/4 tank of gas but doesn't bother me. It's great in the winter. I couldn't live without my Jeep. I've decorated it with neon lights and many softball decals (i play on varisty for my highschool)...all my friends love my jeep too. It has nice clean undamaged interior as well. The seats look like they've never been sat on! I am a Jeep Lifer!!! lol
