Though they are not cheap, I heartily recommend Muck brand Arctic Sport boots.

I purchased mine on Amazon but they have them at the local Tractor Supply Store and many other retail outlets.

I have worn them extensively in Saskatchewan, Central Alaska and Northern Sweden and have often been the only person in my group who is truly comfortable relative to having dry and warm feet. They are not clumsy, though they look like they should be. In Denali I found them as comfortable to hike in as any heavy duty boot intended as a trail shoe or "hiker". I have had them for three years and they show no signs of wear. My experience, however, is that they are not as slip resistant as I would like. On a slick frozen surface or wet, icy rocks they can provide a false sense of security. Caution is advised.

As a footnote, i bought my wife a pair for her birthday last year. We laughed about how unromantic a pair of winter boots are for a birthday present but she has shown appreciation for my "thoughtfulness" more than a few times.

Cheers

Sorels, hands down. They even make "pretty" winter boots, which I have never been able to find before.

http://amzn.to/1DC5G47 My niece gave me a tip; she needed Sorel's, but women's boots were $150 here on sale in town. She bought the same boot, but in the biggest boy's size they had. Fit great and she saved $60!

Sorel's will keep your feet nice and warm; you need really good winter boots if you spend more than 3 minutes outdoors in the dead of winter.
Thanks for the link. Those really are very nice looking boots, all of them.

I have the sorel Joan of arctic boots in Annie's link and love love them! So comfy and warm and they're tall enough that I never have to worry about snow getting in them. And they're waterproof so on warmer days the snow won't melt into your boots and soak your feet. Plus they're cute I wore them hunting last winter when it was 15 below, windchill of about -30 and I stayed comfy warm the whole time we were out, about 8 hours. This was in NE Montana and I am one of those people who is never ever warm, my husband tells me I'm an ice cube all the time. Highly reccomend them.
