Oh ya, I have Lights all over this place, so when I came home from work and still had to feed my critters, I could see.
ALL are on water proof light switches. And some can be switched on from inside the house. Heck I CAN light this place up like a Christmas Tree. But at Night time when all is done they are ALL OFF And it is Dark as I can get it except when there is a full moon. LOL That is what the OP do have lights on all night long? Nope is the majority it looks.

No outside lights - even my neighbors are kind enough not to have any. The stars and moon keep it light enough.
And those stars are awe inspiring!
When I was working, I had a motion light over my front door to see the key hole. If I need to see what my dogs are alerting me to, a hand held flood light works. But then, the 5 acres are perimeter fenced, gates and outbuildings are padlocked.
Inside, the MBR has blackout drapes - that summer sun rises earlier than I like.

I think your best bet are motion detector lights - that way it is dark but should someone or something come around the lights go on - I have a couple placed around by property - if some crook came around and the lights go on they would most likely take off - I have the lights so directed that one light of a multilight fixture shines at my bedroom window - that way it would alert me if someone is out there - I see a lot of deer that way - once a bear -

Motion detector lights. It is nice to be able to walk out to close up the coop at night and along the way, a series of 6 different lights come on. If we are in the house or on the back porch, all lights stay off and we can enjoy the stars.
If the lights come on at night and we are inside, we would know it was time to grab a gun no matter if it was 2 or 4 legged critters.

Guard light was put up behind my house when I was about 10. About 10 years ago I noticed it was out but had no idea how long it had been out, so had it removed. Got outside lights I can switch on when needed, but there is so much light pollution in my area now, I really don't need lights. It is almost like a full moon most nights with the lights from the neighbors.
Come christmas time the trees along neighbors driveway will be lit up and the whole house will be lit up, and I can see to read in my house with no lights on sometimes all night long.

We have a few motion detector lights. But other than that it's dark. Still fumbling around in the dark because I am still getting to know the homestead. I need to remove a few stumps as I seem to trip over them anytime I walk outside at night.

Where i am at there are no street lights. Most of the time can not see anyones houses. I have 3 solar lights connected and 2 other solar lights and then some solar lights for the deck. On the other side of the house have a street light but can not see it coming up the road. Want to put a wood furnace somewhere close to the light.

I have 6 solar LED motion lights on the trees that flank the driveway. That way I know if someone is coming in 100 yard increments. I like them. I also sleep during the day because I have been on nocturnal shift for 9 years. I black that room out completely.

Always have had a pole light out by the barn. It's been out for a few years at a time, but I do like it in the wintertime and replaced it a couple of years ago. Kind of comforting to see the light showing through the blizzard.

In the winter here it's dark by 4 pm so there's a porch light on a timer so the light is already on when I come home in the dark and I turn that off when I lock up and retire for the night.
The greenhouses need light for a minimum of 18 hours a day so the greenhouses are all on timers so the lights come on an hour before dusk and turn off approximately around midnight. The greenhouses also light up everything outside in the surrounding yards at night after sunset until they go off at midnight so I don't need any other lights out there if I'm doing stuff outside after sunset. I don't leave any lights on outside or inside after bed-time.

Oh how I would love to have the pole light on a switch inside the house! I have threatened to shoot it out a time or two when DH was gone coon hunting. I really am not comfortable with strangers walking up here after dark from down on the river. Too many druggies around from time to time, ya know...

Outside, I have a variety of motion-sensor lights that pop on as sensitive as a 70-pound dog passing by. Most are solar lights, the one on the garage & driveway is A/C powered flood lights that make it look like daylight out there.
Inside the house is usually dark. Open blinds give me enough light most days, and I have one lamp by me until I head to bed. I keep a mini LED flashlight with me, or use my cell phone as a flashlight when I need a bit more light like walking to bed with three dogs milling around in the dark. One dog is black and has been stepped on more times that I would like to admit. LOL!

No yard light but my lights are always on in the barn and corrals to help deter the coyotes and help my sheep feel safe. They like the light and will come in from pasture just to stand in a lighted area.
They are LED floods and highly directed. Like many here I enjoy the stars and get the best sleep when there is zero light other than stars and moon. Hate the orange glow of HPS yard lights as well as the glare of mercury/MH... glad LEDs came along as they do not shine at all outside of my corrals.

Yeah, we had a few outdoor lights, here, when we bought the place 11 years ago.
The Old Couple that owned the place before us liked it well lit. They had porch lights by each doorway, as well as several other lights.
There is a halogen light on the front of the garage, that automatically goes on, at dusk to dawn. It lights up the driveway and front of the garage, pretty well. And there is Dusk to Dawn, pole light, up in the fenced back yard, by the garage and the barn that are out there.
There are flood lights on the bottom of the upstairs deck, that shine down the driveway in each direction too. the whole place is really well lit. But we don't turn all tthe lights on all the time..
When we first were moving in. a few small things were lifted from around the garage.
But I replaced the bulb in that light and nothing has disappeared since then.

When we wired our property and the power company came to hook us up to the grid they asked us if we wanted them to put up a pole light near our barn. They got a resounding NO from us. DH and I like to star gaze also and the star field on a clear summer night is breathtaking. We do have two motion detector lights mainly because we have had problems with things walking off the property and were told by LEOs that motion detectors worked better at keeping your stuff safe than dusk to dawn lights. If we see a light kick on and the dogs bark, then we know something is going on that we need to check out. If the light clicks on and no barking, it's usually a 4 legged varmint wandering through over a 2 legged one.
One of our neighbors, bout a mile down the road has a pole light. Every now and then we wonder if we could take it out with a well aimed .22.

Yeah they need light to see what they are doing. It pinpoints them and they can't see you. The light has night blinded them.

It hurts me to see people living out in the country living like they are in a prison. If you need that move back to the city.

I have 4 lights in my carport an two in porch ceiling that are on dimmer switches. That way when entertaining I can light accordingly, plus a light by front door. Spotlights in the eaves can be switched on when needed as well, NOT needed often for sure.
