We get them every so often. The other scam is the caller says he's with the IRS and you're in big trouble with back taxes and a team of agents is on its way to arrest you unless you pay up RIGHT NOW with debit/credit/bank account info.
They almost all use caller ID spoofers these days, showing that they're calling from a local number when they're really in Mumbai or someplace.
Best response I ever heard: "Hello, Smith residence ... Yeah, no, she's not avail ... hey guys, be sure you get photos of the broken glass over there by the body ... Now, this is Sergeant Jones, Homicide Squad, don't bother hanging up we've already traced the call. Now, what's your full name, Johnny, and what's your relationship with the late Mrs. Smith and why are you calling her?"
You can string that one out for a loooong time.

We've had them call a couple of times here. Once I kept them on the line for about 2 hours, acting dumb and like my computer was having major problems. It was fun. Most of the time I hang up with the statement 'this is a scam' as I don't have time to fool with them. I worry about our parents getting caught in it though and have warned them, as well as many friends.

One of the ladies I work with got the IRS phone call. Luckily she didn't fall for it, she said they were really convincing and had a LOT of her income tax info.

Got one last week.
Thought about this and was ready this time. Let them go on and on. When they said my computer was sending messages I asked which one? What was the computer name? Yes, sir all my computers have unique names, which one is it? Which platform does it run on? I do have an old win98 that the kiddos use, but not hooked up. It was fun. When I was bored I told him he was lying and we both knew it. Yelled "this is a scam and don't call back." CLICK!

I get the Asian Indian calls all the time from the "Microsoft Windows" group trying to "help" me with my computer which is about to crash from viruses. After the first few times, I decided if they were going to annoy me with the repeated calls, I would annoy them back by taking up their time.
I put the phone on speaker while I read and responded to HT posts, and for 20 minutes I listened to the caller trying to coach me thru a computer fix. I played the role of an elderly, hard of hearing man and was very appreciative of their call but pretended I just couldn't understand what they wanted me to do. He wanted me to press the windows-R keys and no matter how hard he tried, I couldn't figure out how to do it. He got extremely frustrated and I had to be careful not to laugh.
Finally after about 20 minutes I came out of character and asked him how long it was going to take before he figured out I was wasting his time. Then he got very mad and said he was going to have sex with my mother and used slang not appropriate for this forum. I told him that was nice because she was lonely and could use a good friend. And then he got more and more vulgar and angry. I was determined to keep deflecting it and force him to hang up on me. Finally in a flurry of what I assume to be cursing in Hindi, he hung up and I declared victory.
But now they call my house almost every day before lunch. I always let them tell me about the dangerous viruses and then ask them if after we are done if I can sex their mother. I figure if we are going to get to that point, I might as well short cut the process. It usually results in them cursing and hanging up but the last time he tried to fight back. He stammered that his mother is dead and I said it was because of how forcefully I had sex with her. He tried to counter but I kept describing in ever greater detail all the nasty things I did to his mother. He was livid and finally hung up. I declared victory.
I realize what I'm doing to these guys is juvenile, vulgar, and very unChristian. So if any of you feel a need to chastise me, go ahead, you're right. But I have a 7th grade sense of humor and it amuses me. I can't make them stop calling but I can annoy the poop out of them.
My wife answered one of the calls and asked where they were calling from. He said the United States. She asked what city and he said, "New Jersey, United States" so she told him nice try and hung up.

Keep the phone number for the White House and your Congressman near the phone.
"I don't need help, but could you call my neighbor?..."
Sometimes I fantasize that if EVERY telemarketing and scam call was forwarded three places - the White House, the congressional offices, and the CEO of AT&T - that the problem with the calls would disappear overnight.

That's too funny! I had a scam call from AT&T. He said I was getting a $300 dollar credit to my cell phone bill and just needed my account info and bank account #.
I hung up and called AT&T. They called me the next week for a written statement so they could prosecute. That dummy sure picked the wrong front!
