I have never bought anything on CL, but I like the idea of the police dept parking lot..lol

CL doesn't allow ads for guns, there must be more to the story,,,,,,,,'specially if the guns were still on scene

Ya it might have been a local message board I know of several in WI that sell guns on their sports forum, but yes CL as well as E Bay does not allow Guns to be sold.
This is pretty much for both CL and E Bay.
Prohibited
weapons; firearms/guns and components; BB/pellet, stun, and spear guns; etc
ammunition, clips, cartridges, reloading materials, gunpowder, fireworks, explosives.

I have had mostly very good experiences selling using CL, however, one has to watch out for scammers! I only will accept cash and my DH is always here. We never sell anything very valuable, but collectibles? Will only meet at a different location, never our home (an unwanted guest later in the evening...). In addition, when we do sell anything here at our property, we let our dog welcome them, and explain he is really quite vicious when protecting our property, but we are armed in case he needs help...
Occasionally, there is a no-show, but not that often. As others have posted, not sold until the folks arrive with cash and buy. Otherwise, I made an exception for our travel trailer. A couple drove 2 hours to get here, constantly in touch, called, and texting updates. I had others trying to outbid them for our trailer, but I refused to sell it out from under this couple. They brought cash and paid full price & $50 extra for holding it for them. She told me that she had been looking for one exactly like ours for over a year and finally it was in her price range. I was very honest when I showed it to her and also in the ad. She sent me a very nice email after purchasing it. When we sold the fridge left at our new property- the guys came and paid a deposit on it. A few days later, they paid the balance, and hauled it away.

I got in a little trouble at the county seat
Lord, they put me in the jailhouse
For loafing on the street
Well, the judge said guilty
He made his point
He said fourty-five dollars
Or thirty days in the joint
That'll be cash on the barrelhead, hun
You can take your choice
You're twenty-one
No money down
No credit plan
No time to chase you
Cause I'm a busy man
I found a telephone number on a laundry slip
I had a good, hardy jailor
With a six gun hip
He let me call long distance
She said, "Number, please"
And just as soon as I told her
She shouted back at me
Said that'll be cash on the barrelhead, hun
Not part, not half
But the entire sum
No money down
No credit line
Cause a little boy tells me
You're the travelin' kind
Thirty days in the jailhouse
Four days on the road
I was feelin' mighty hungry
My feet, a heavy load
I saw a Greyhound comin'
Stuck out my thumb
As soon as I was seated
The driver caught my arm
Said that'll be cash on the barrelhead, hun
This old, grey dog gets paid to run
When the engine starts
And the wheels will roll
Give me cash on the barrelhead
I take ya down the road
Ohh, cash on the barrelhead
I take you down the road
(Dolly Parton lyrics)

I finally learned how to use craigslist years ago.
Don't hold anything for anyone unless they drop off cash to hold it. Then you will only hold it for the agreed amout of time. The cash to hold it goes toward the purchase price when they come to finish the deal. If they don't come back, the cash is mine. You will have guys all the time drop off $20 to hold $250 item. Then after two weeks (as long as I will hold), I don't hear from them. I sell it to someone else and then the 1st guy comes by to get his item. HA! Then they want the $20 back. Nope.
Call before you come! I always have guys call to get directions and then say, "we will be there first thing in the morning". I tell them, please call before you come, I'm not going to hold it. I say, "I get up at 5am. Please call so you will know if I have it still". I still get guys that show up a day after it is sold. They cuss me up and down. Weird. They say, "I said I was coming this morning!" I remind them they were supposed to call and that I wasn't going to hold it. Doesn't matter. They still blame me.
Now! Like what was said above, there are exceptions. I've had guys really want something and try and figure out a way to get me some cash to hold it. If it isn't a big money item and isn't a quick sale item, I will hold it if it feels right but that is rare.
Then I had the couple that came and bought a bunch of 1968 cougar parts. they didn't bring any blankets or anything so they could load the parts in their truck. I let them barrow my big shop towels to place between the metal items. They said they would ship the towels back. Nope. Lost all my towels. That is what I get.....

Yes that is so true.
Just like that calf I sold yesterday I had one that said hold it till today I will definitely buy her.
Nope I had one that said I can be there in one hour. I take that as a pretty good sale as they are a hour away and would be pulling a trailer. LOL
That is a pretty good sign you have a good sale happening.
And Now Today not holding something for a person. I do write back and say Sorry item has already been sold. And leave it at that.
But take the first good buying don't wait and hold unless money is in hand.
I have done the same thing when selling a junked car, people brought a car hauler from over a hour away, you KNOW they are serious then. LOL

I refuse to do business like that, most times I have considerable travel to make a purchase.
I won't drive it unless I have a guarantee that the goods will be there when I arrive.
If I say I'll take it I will. now logistics is sometimes a issue but I maintain contact in the mean time.
I also always make sure that the price is set. Sometimes the asking price is high, so we either agree to new terms or I ask them to take my number and if no one bites or offers the same extend me the courtesy of the first call back.
Or if they say its already promised , I will tell them I'm willing to pay this.
Many times the buyer does show but then wants to haggle.
More times then not I will get a call back.
The plasma cutter I picked up a while back, guy was willing to hold it a week till I could make the trip, not only that but he also pulled the ad. we where actually able to do it sooner, did not want to chance him changing his mind. Ad had only been up a 1/2 hour and I was the first to call, most people would not of considered the terms. As he could of easily sold it for more and more then likly that day.
He had the price or best offer, the price was more then fair if as described and I told him like many , if its what you say I'll meet your price.
Now being on the sellers end of craigslist, I won't do.
I find road side sales and flyers or a ad on the board at the elevator to alleviate the hagglers and tire kickers.

A Tennessee man was fatally shot last weekend during a meeting with two men who had answered a Craigslist ad for guns.
Joshua McLean, 30, and his brother drove to meet the potential buyers at a shopping center parking lot in Nashville on Saturday night, News Channel 5 reports.
McLeans' brother told officials that he heard two gunshots when Joshua got out of his car. The brother got out of his own vehicle and found McLean lying on the ground, bleeding.

I know it does not seem like it but most folks are honorable and decent. Unfortunately craigs list is a magnet for the others as well. I agree that when using craigs list the exchange should always be in a safe public place. I refuse to let the creepos stop me from using a valuable resource.

We have bought and sold a lot of items on Craigslist and all but one has gone smoothly. We put quite a few hens on Craigslist a few years back for $5 each. Their pen was in a barn that you could access down the street from the house. A couple drove over 30 miles to come look at them and decided they were too high but didn't want to haggle. I thought it was kind of strange that someone would drive that far anyway for chickens when they're all over the place around here.
The next morning all the chickens had been taken from their pens. Since we're pretty sure that young couple came back and helped themselves in the middle of the night now we meet folks with whatever we're selling down on the highway about 4 miles from where we're located so we don't have strangers coming to scope out the property. We just have them call us when they're a few miles away so we don't waste our time sitting around waiting on them.

When you meet someone in a different place remember you license plates can be traced back to your house.

While true, the license plates do not "show" buyers what we all have at our houses... That is the point! Also, showing up with the kind of DH I have, it would take a gutsy person to come to our home...

Local guy advertised on CL wanting to trade or buy a Barred Rock rooster. Called him on a Wednesday, he wanted a new rooster to change bloodlines. OK.....we had 10 that were 12 weeks old we had hatched, and I said I was going to process them in the next few days......I'd take his for any one of mine, the canning jars probably wouldn't care which one was which.
He said, OK.....I'll call you for directions over the weekend. He didn't. Tuesday rolled around, it was a nice cool day.....wife said "today is the day".
I SWEAR...we had just put the last jar of meat in the canner when the phone rings, yeah, it's the guy.....and I said "you snooze....you lose....I didn't hear from you, told you they were going for meat, and they did".
He was mad, but what the heck ? I'm supposed to wait around on somebody that may, or may not show up, and for whom I was merely doing a favor ? ( NO money involved....just a rooster for rooster trade)

I've never sold anything on Craiglist but I have bought 2 tractors, corn planter, grain drill, lime spreader and a multitude of other implements off craigslist and have had nothing but good experiences. I literally have run all over the state of Michigan picking up farm implements.
With my job I am out of the country for months at a time. I am sure when I call they all think that I am a scam or probably the best excuse ever as to why I cannot do an immediate pickup on a item. I had sellers on craigslist hold a corn planter and grain drill for 2 1/2 months before I could pick them up.
Usually a lot of this requires a pretty large deposit but also think it is how well you communicate with the seller. This past spring I went an purchased a JD tractor sight unseen that I had to get financing for. While I was working with the lenders he had several people call and tell him they would pay cash up front on a 21K purchase. I told him I had to get financing but it would not be a problem getting the loan approved. Fortunately he gave me his word that he wouldn't sell until he heard from me about the loan. It took me about a week to find a bank that would actually do a loan on a used tractor. In this whole time I kept in constant contact with the seller through email/phone since I needed ser. # and such.
If he would have been first one with cash takes it home I would have been out of a heck of a deal. If that would have been the case I would have been really ticked off going through a ton of legwork to get a loan and have a seller break his word. So while there may be a few bad apples out there on Craigslist I would say the majority of them are working a square deal.
you can find some incredible deals on craigslist but you have to move fast and be willing to travel. From what I've experienced the really good deals on CL rarely last more than 24 hours. Usually its less than 12.

BRP, until there is cash in my hand and the object gone, they are NOT sold.
First come, first serve.
And yeah, I have not gotten stuff I wanted because someone called dibs so I ignored it, and the dibber reneged.

I actually did end up buying a car off CL. From an older person. We met in a public place away from his home and I tried out the car. Was nice in that he was able to deliver it to our home so I had time to register it. But you sure have to be careful!
