yep thats the problem we have dirt road and snow plowing the road into our area is one plow bill, then each of us has to pay to get our driveways done its a pain and costs me $$$$$$ the hoa pres gets her driveway done for free because the plow man needs to get to her for the check

OK..I'll send the compass...but..with the gas well industry in our area..we haven't received personally any $$ but it has been good for a lot of locals and farmers..Being out further would possibly allow us to be even more self sufficient and away from any civil unrest that is due to explode in this country which I fear is not too far away from happening. So that was my point..more remote = safety ??? or more remote..sorry we did move.

Helena, I hear you. The road in front of my house was paved maybe 20 years ago now. It had been a very small town road with very few people living on it, and some people even thought it was a private road. It felt like a friend had died when they paved it.

We worried about traffic moving faster, and it does, but it's quieter, and it's so much cleaner without all of the dust flying. We worried about dogs being hit because of faster cars when they went across the road to the lake, and none has ever been hit. And most of the time it isn't that much faster than it was.

It didn't take that long to get used to it. I still think back fondly of the way it used to be, but it's still a very small road, and while it probably made it possible for a couple of people to become year round residents who wouldn't have done so before it was paved, the traffic really hasn't changed that much.

If you ALLOW yourself to ease into it and think it's ok, I think you'll be fine with it. Grieve for awhile and then start looking for its good points. You'll find some, I'm sure.

I understand completely your concern for future problems, but more remote might not always be better if you've developed relationships with your neighbors where you are. We're pretty remote, but we're still building bonds with the neighbors we see as trustworthy.

I've read many counties are tearing out pavement and going back to gravel due to the cost of maintaining asphalt versus gravel roads.

I built a 3 point hitch for my Bronco to pull a 6' grading blade for snow removal. Driving a heated car, sipping coffee sure beats sitting up on a tractor seat in a snow storm. Now if I could just get someone to pay me!

Here they Chip and Sealed bunch of Roads, over time they broke up and no money to repair. Far worse than gravel.

When I came here in 81, Slick road had been paved ONCE, maybe 30yrs before. Maybe less than that with shiester politicians and contractors working together. IF one traveled 40 on it they were asking for a blown tire and a need tio reset their steering arms. I had told wife I had lived on a long driveway as a kid, and the 40 I had had a long driveway that went in one direction, and the county road it came out on wasn't taken care of by the county. We noticed that hardly NOBODY drove on it during the day, and those who did, drove slow, so I set the house 84 ft from the road. 3 yrs later, they paved it, and 2yrs after that people were using it to go to and come home from work, and driving fast. THEN they told their trucker friends that it was a good shortcut, and they started driving fast on it to, using there jake brakes coming down the either of 2 hills that verge at my driveway.
I know how you feel.

well you could have the problem were having in our area - they changed the status to it to side road (or whatever the equivalent it) from secondary. Anyways it's paved but they haven't been repairing it and once the potholes are big enough (2-3 feet across) they fill it in with gravel - before that they but a rough road sign up where the larger pothole are. I understand that side roads here are gravel here but it sure would be nice if they made the change properly instead of using halfway measures.
