As I understand it he wants to make a pto shaft out of 4 pieces of angle iron.

That will take more than $10 worth of welding rod, much less the cost of the steel angle irons, then the grinding to get the corners squared up.

Don't know where you get your $10 from, but there has to be a lot more cost in it than that.

Me I would start with the proper tubes and go from there, should be able to weld it up but I wouldn't start with angle iron.....

Would help to know what its going to run, a 10 hp load or a 75 hp load, makes a difference on how rugged and good the weld job has to be.

I keep some salvage steel in my shop for just such projects. There is a steel outlet not too far from me that sells lots of round and square stock, box tube, and angle iron etc for 30 cts lb. Its new steel, just not in full length peices... 2 to 6 feet pieces. Most of the iron I have I paid 16 cts for, back before the price hikes a couple years ago. It makes sense to me to keep a variety of odds and ends here on the farm so I only "restock" every two or three years when my pile gets low. it only takes a few sticks of rod to weld up an outer box tube out of angle iron.
