These kinds of threads just make me smile everytime I read them. I am so glad to not have to worry about how much wood has to be cut, split, hauled in, and ashes hauled out. These days I just reach over, flip the little switch and my gas logs in the fireplace lite up. Plenty of clean heat for free!

Wood is our only heat and we burn a little less than 0.75 cord of dry sugar maple, ash or ironwood a year. Our house is very small (252 sq-ft), we keep it cool (60's) and it is high thermal mass - all these things help. We put up about a cord a year and I always have my eye on standing dead trees that I can cut down in the middle of the winter if I need to do so.

Our old farm house ate seven cord of wood a year and was never satisfied or warm. I'm glad not to be heating or maintaining that monster anymore!

Our house is new. We built it last year. Has 2x6 walls and 14 inches of insulation in attic. 2000 sq ft very open floor plan. We kept our last houses furnace at 64 all year out of choice. We don't like it hot.

We burn about 4 cords/yr, wood heat only. Right now, I have 2-3 in the basement, another shed with 3 already cut/split, and will have another shed with 3 in it by fall....so we're about one winter ahead. My plan was to get couple more of my '3 cord sheds' built this year, but I don't know if I'm gonna make that goal.

We farm so we spend most of our time outdoors. We come inside for quiet things like dinner, reading, sleeping. It isn't for everyone but it works for the five of us. Size was simply what we could build in the two months before winter closed in.

We heat a 2400 sq ft house in Maine. Last winter seemed like a very loong winter. We went through 3 1/2 cords of wood.

Our woodstove accepts fairly large pieces through it's 12" X 14" door. So I rarely split any firewood. There is no need that that.

We burn mixed woods, most of it has been seasoned for less than 6 months.

Thank God - I'm 80 years old and am still very active - keep busy all the time - am in good health - take no medication - although I eat good and live clean - the one thing I attribute my good health to is getting firewood every year - it's good exercise and keeps me going - lot of fresh air and exercise - I also fish and hunt and have a big garden but the wood is were I get the most exercise - I got 5 cords stacked right now but I am still getting more whenever the weather is not too humid - money wise I would not have to do this but I plan on doing it as long as I can - I ain't one to be sitting on my behind watching TV - you got to keep moving or you will stop and get rusty -

House is small ( 700 sq ft ) and lacking in insulation . I heat only with wood , normally use 4 cords , last winter used almost 6. I replaced the two extra in the spring so I have six for this year and have begun working on 6 for the following.

JoePa, good for you. I agree 100%, I have often thought that if my grandad had not listened to his doctors when they told him to slow down and take it easy, he may still be here today.
