Up here, near Caibou, we found a 50 acre farm with 500+ apple trees, two streams, three barns and a great 1901 farm house.
We arrived March 1st, and we are met with 4' of snow on the ground, a low temp of -21 and almost daily snow. We love it! The Spring and Summer have been simply stunning. We would recommend northern Maine to the hardiest of homesteaders and those people who like to live amongst them!
Even down here in the Southern half of Maine, homesteading is not bad.

We are just a bit North of Bangor. We know a few folks up in Northern Maine, they all enjoy it up there.

ETI SS :Someone said that their taxes had gone up. In our township, taxes have been going down slightly each year.
If you live in an organized town like the majority of mainers then you will see
property valuations almost everywhere have almost doubled over the last 10 years and the unorganized territories are not exempt from some increase and in some counties more than doubled .
I suspect it will double again in the next 10 years .

Proof is in the Maine property tax valuation chart listed in the link.

Valuations = assessments

I live in a UT of Penobscot County.

Over all assessments may have gone up, I don't know. I met the UT tax assessor. His work schedule has him going through each UT to re-assess once every 10 years. Your assessment can not change without the assessor being there. Which is only going to happen once every ten years.

Thew only assessments that could change more frequently would be in the Organized Towns, that hire their own assessors.

So far our property taxes have gone down.

Consider yourself in the minority and lucky to boot. I'm envious.

2K for property taxes this year, 4K 10 years from now ?

We will probably have to sell out in a few years at the rate these clowns are bilking us

Everyone in our township saw their property taxes drop the last few years.

Our combined tax 'burden' including: income taxes, property taxes [new large house and 150 acres with river frontage], and vehicle taxes [truck and motorcycle] all slide in under $1k.

Most of Maine is UT, in any of the UTs you can find cheap land.

It is easier to say where to avoid. Avoid the coast, avoid the NH border [stay at least 40 miles from it], avoid all Organized Towns, avoid the 'tourist destinations'. Sounds like a lot, but really all of these regions together are only a minority of Maine.

Most of Maine is rural, no tourists, nobody bothering you, ....
