But I don't think I could live there in the winter.
We were on Worthley Pond, East Peru. In the 'mountain & lake' region. Several cute small towns nearby. Went to some summer festivals/fairs.

Would love to hear from ME residents as to what things to do this summer!
You may be familiar with the height of land turnout on rt 17 north of rumford toward Oquossoc but even better if you want to stand on top on maine's western mountains and can drive to it check out these two places , the quill hill site is closer to rangeley.

We were on worthley pond this summer visiting family renting a camp there, the most horrendous t-storm rolled through .

If only it weren't a 28hr drive to go look for jobs... *sigh*.
Permies are catching on here.

Organic food production is growing a lot. More farms start-up every year. New Farmer's Markets open every year too.

Jobs are scarce.

Fortunately you do not need much more than minimum-age to support a family here.

Do you live in Maine

We used to....

Lived just outside of Augusta in Belgrade lakes.

Our property was 24 acres with water front on 2 sides.

I'm born and raised in upstate NY, Maine was ok.... But no comparison to home. We have 60 acres here that is much more enjoyable. Better seasons, better soil, better hunting, better water, much better weather and also more convenient if you need something. Also we have more customers here by a long shot.

Maine is a great place but I much prefer where we are now.

Our son and his family just moved back to Idaho for his job. They have a house near Camden for sale. Large house older, but updated, small barn, room for horses and other animals, pond, creek, spring. It's between the coast and a huge lake, would even make a B&B. there is a small ski hill for winter fun as well. The school system is outstanding, people nice.

Also mid sept. is the Farmington agriculture fair if you happen to be
passing through the area.

http://farmingtonfairmaine.com/wp-co...ir-Program.pdf

Also , Maine property taxes are rising . Started about 4 years ago when the govenor cut state income taxes only to shift the revenue shortfall from said income tax cuts by reducing municipal revenue sharing from the state.
Our property taxes are 25% higher than 4 years ago.

Ahh, we've been looking at property in the Midcoast region and are floored at the property taxes! 3 x as high as when we lived there over 11 years ago.

Molly - that's the area we are moving back to next spring. Expensive, beautiful area, but that's where family is.

And in late September is the Common Ground Fair, I believe it is still in Unity, Maine. Put on by the Maine Organic Farmers & Growers Association (MOFGA). MOFGA is one of the reasons small farms are growing in Maine.

Do you have a link? We're moving somewhere around Rockport in June. Are mostly looking slightly inland due to cost.

I can't get a link to work, but it is on Realtor.com and Zillow. It's 66 Start RD, Camden ME. They are very willing to negotiate. The 10 + acres next to the house is on a long term lease, and could be leased or bought as well.

Thank you! Beautiful house and location. That is my dream kitchen, I cannot imagine having a kitchen that huge! But it's way more house than we need or want to take care of and out of our price range. And I wonder why I'll always have cute little kitchens....

The Common Ground Fair is great

We go every year. It is all about homesteading.

Someone said that their taxes had gone up. In our township, taxes have been going down slightly each year.

We just moved here in March. We live in the *real* Maine, Aroostook county. In our search for relatively inexpensive land, a strong "homesteader" attitude, lower taxes, and decent farm produce laws, we looked at many states. Up here, near Caibou, we found a 50 acre farm with 500+ apple trees, two streams, three barns and a great 1901 farm house.
We arrived March 1st, and we are met with 4' of snow on the ground, a low temp of -21 and almost daily snow. We love it! The Spring and Summer have been simply stunning. We would recommend northern Maine to the hardiest of homesteaders and those people who like to live amongst them!
