The cold frame is free standing and I run an oil filled space heater and will even throw a tarp over the plastic if it get really cold (like 20). Also have a few blowers (one in and one out) that kick on if it gets hot. The beans I grow are Blue Lake S-7 Stringless Pole Beans - these produce well and have no strings. Other varieties have been stringy in the past. A pic is shown below. One could also make this setup from PVC but we used treated wood posts and 2x4's.

I wish we had more rain. Really though, whenever it rains you'll find me out there replanting starts on the rest of the property. I figure it's the best time since I won't have to water them in. :P

Rambler, I am very sorry to hear about the flooding. Words seem so feeble. I hope you can replant some of your crops.

MichaelZ, thanks for the picture. I have never grown blue lake #7. Next year I'll give them a try. I've planted violetto and Helda. The germination on the violetto was awfu. The Helda 100%. Still have to get more wire up for more beans and think about starting Chinese cabbage and other cold weather plants. Are your blowers in the greenhouse/coldframe thermostatically controlled? If so, how much do they cost?

I have two controls. I have one on my heater since the thermostat on the heater is not very reliable - this is one that turns on when it gets cold and costs only about $15, available at any home store - I wire this ahead of an outlet. I have another on my blowers that cost about $40 that turns on when it gets hot - it is made by kkontrols but there are now similar ones - just search for a "greenhouse thermostat".

It rained again last night, came down heavy. I must say my weeds in the garden are doing well. I had to replant some stuff because it was too cool and too wet this spring. Fortunately the land is sandy loam so it drains well. Its interesting how up north here we have maybe too much rain, and down in the south they are starving for rain.
