Ooh that's perfect! It solves all my problems, AND I get to go to TSC! I'll look into that. I can fill in all the holes but one, drop it in, then fill in the last hole. Wait and see if any get dug back out, rinse and repeat until the holes stay full. And no dealing with carcasses. :P

We tried the smoke bombs but they didn't work. I found out that they do most of their foraging in the early morning and early evening, so I began to wait with a lawnchair and a .22. They dug under my barn, my corncrib, and then my house. They can ruin a foundation.

I've heard that another thing that works is to ask a farmer for a few gallons of anhydrous. It's heavier than air, and will go down the hole and smother them. Then it dissipates.

I've also heard that urinating down a hole works. But what I've seen is that when you evict them from that burrow, they go dig another one close to it and you've simply got more holes.

The population here is down now. It's about the only critter I'll steer for if I see it on the road.

Get two pieces of flexible aluminum dryer vent to make a sixteen foot tube. If you see the hog, scare him(or her, or baby) back into the hole. They will stay down there for some time, afraid to come out again. Poke the dryer vent into the hole and attach the other end to your garden tractor---run it for twenty minutes or so----the carbon monoxide will flood the den and put the whole d**n family gently to sleep permanently. Fill up the holes with dirt while they decompose........

Put them in your compost pile.

Putting dog poop in holes stops my dogs from digging them deeper so maybe put some dog poop in the burrows.

So those of you who are shooting groundhogs, is there anything I should be looking for in an anti-varmint gun? I'm an ok shot with my SKS, but don't know a whole lot about any other gun ever. Am I just looking for a rifle with cheap ammo?

I'd just use what you got. The only disadvantage is having a large piece of lead out there. A 22 will do the job but it's not worth a purchase for just one thing.

If you can find the ammo, that is, and at a decent price.

Sulphur smoke is heavier than air, and will fumigate just about any burrow. Put it in a small tin, light it with a burning splinter, put it down the high hole in an underground maze AWAY FROM ANY STRAW, SEEDS OR SHAVINGS. You don't want to set your tractor shed on fire, let alone the tractor. The smoke is acrid, choking, poisonous - BE CAREFUL. If you don't kill them ALL, you'll definitely make them wish you had, and there's a substantial incentive for any survivors to pick up and move.

A good light rifle (.22, .17HMR, air rifle), a good hide, and a good casserole recipe is a better answer; you always benefit from shooting practice, and anything you can't eat the pets, pigs or poultry can.

When we were kids a friend had a groundhog dug into the pond dam and his dad wanted it goner. Of course we were at that age of having to prove ourselves so Jim got a couple gallon of farm gas and poured it down the hole then lit it. It was pretty cool so we were standing around and watching it when someone discovered another hole. Jim took off to get more gas and me and another boy had to go home. Next day at school our other 4 friends came to school with no hair, eyebrows or even eye lashes. They looked like aliens! I'm so glad dad needed me home that night!

You could put some dry ice in the hole. As it turns to CO2 gas it will sink to the bottom and possibly put them all into permanent sleep.

Do you have a dog? My dog Dawson, loves woodchuck, he won't share it with his sister, He is always looking for one to eat. Just dispose of it after a couple of days as a dog loves to roll in it when it gets ripe. As far as an SKS, it will work fine, might not be much of the woodchuck left.

Nope, no dog. We have chickens, ducks, more ducks, goats, and what I now suspect are too many cats, but no dog yet. I have severe "ALL the critters!", so it is likely only a matter of time.

Heeyyyy! That looks a lot like my gasoline powered chuck launcher. It's probably a bit safer, though less fun without the flying chuck chunks.

Use Less, thank you so much for the tip about setting the trap on their trail. I was on my way to the store and saw the piggie eating my buckwheat. It ran off when I pulled into the drive but I had the trap ready to go. I didn't even put any bait in it. 15 minutes later I had the little piggie in the trap. A single shot sent her to groundhog heaven. But this was just a young one. I know there are more. There are always more.

Trap has been reset.
