Just because they used to use your land as if it was their own doesn't give them any right to continue to do so.

Take pictures of the "campers" using your dumpster. Send the campground owner a letter and the pictures. State that the dumpster is not for the camper's use, it must stop, and add a bill for using your dumpster. Suggest that the owner get their own dumpster. Tell the owner to tell his tenants that trespassers will be prosecuted.

Not only is it annoying, but you lose control of what goes into the dumpster. I'm sure that your hauler has rules about what they accept: no propane bottles, no flammable liquids, etc. If anyone puts anything illegal into your dumpster, you'll be liable and may be dropped from the dumpster contract. I wouldn't worry about your reputation; I've asked a few neighbors to stay off my property and I'm known as the grumpy guy. I really don't care since I get along with everyone. Curt

We have somewhat of the same problem. We live a ways off the road in the woods with a pipeline coming through our property rather close to our house. The pipeline bushhogs every two years. For some reason, people just seem to think the pipeline is like the road. Whenever it's cut, we have a problem with 4-wheelers. They mean no harm, just out having fun muddin, but if someone got hurt, we'd be responsible. I've had to confront two, unrelated to each other, just recently. I've just reminded them that it is the pipeline, but it's still private property, and ask them if they want to leave the way they came or come out by our drive, making it easier to leave.

Is the dumpster you're talking about that green dump can? If so, easy solution would be to move it away from the end of the driveway.

I think you should move. It would reduce your stress levels. Pick somewhere far out where you have lots of elbow room. That is what I did. No need to live a life of constant stress from neighbors.

Farmchix, as to what you said about vid equipment. When I was a kid we had a informal dump a mile or less outside of our small town. People got to going in there picking around looking for stuff. We, the folks kinda got a kick or shock if they saw someone they knew doing that. Sell, maybe the city attorney told the city that they could get sued if somebody got hurt in there, so they started putting names of people seen at the dump. That for the most part ended that.

No. Do not move. You have a lovely place and looks like you have put a lot of work into it. I would not go to the expense and let someone(s) run me out. Make it clear you will stand your ground. If you are a bad neighbor, they are worse! I would plant fast growing trees really thick on the edge of my property to make a blind.
Like you said, you knew they were there before you bought. Make the best of it.

We had a place in middle of no where. My wife said we was too old.

Still had trouble for a month out of a year from a Guy from the city. He was the one that bought our place. I pull pistol on him once because he was driving through our place and camping on our property so he wouldn't disturb the Deer on his place.

I have two thoughts.

Could you politely explain to the owner that the people are putting trash in your dumpster by mistake, and that if you keep it locked they may wind up littering which is bad for the owner and he would have to have someone come pick up the trash.

Maybe he could just provide a trash receptacle there, and allow you to use it.

That charred wood is excellent bio-char for your garden soil!

Good Luck.

Get a metal no trespassing sign. Shoot holes in it from the back so anyone looking at it can tell somebody shot towards it in their direction while they're out by the road. Put it out by the road. Scatter a few shotgun hulls out in your yard.

I would definitely speak to the owner. I would also move my trash bin further away from the gate. You might want to consider selling firewood. We are on a route to a big state park and a couple of people here sell firewood in small bundles just for campers. I would try that if I were you. That would let them know your wood is yours and if they want some they need to pay for it.

Well if they come onto your property and a fire happens you ultimately are responsible for their actions, especially if you say nothing. I would say something, liability is a witch. My thoughts are - what you permit, you promote. What a pain for you though.

You know, that is really frustrating for both sides....

If you look at it from the campers side, any one person looking to start their camp fire, what does it hurt to pick up a few twigs?

If you are cleaning up your campsite, nice of the responsible people to do so and look for a place to put the garbage instead of toss in the ditch....

As a temp camper person you really never know the property lines or rules, etc.

It sounds like the camp ground owner is as much responsible for controlling this type of stuff as anything.

I'd sure be frustrated with it, I am not excusing such behavior, but rather looking at it practically?

It seems the camp ground opener should be providing dumpsters, and much better instructions on their locations and the property boundaries and such.

Anyhow, from what I read, neither the camper nor you are wrong, just as things are set up the campers are a little bit lost and the campground operators could use some encouragement to run a better ship? I might visit them, if frustrations escalate maybe talk about township/ county/ etc regulating of such businesses for garbage and fencing and stuff....

We had similar problems with a dumpster located at our business office before we retired. Everybody and their dog was dumping their trash in it, even a bank next door to us. Admittedly, sometimes they threw away some cool stuff that we were able to salvage, but it still got to be irritating when they filled our dumpster leaving us no room for our office or home trash. Even more irritating were the transient renters across the street who were too cheap to pay for their own city pick up and instead chose to use our dumpster for their trash.

Our solution was simple. We talked to the Bank and asked them to either stop using our dumpster or start paying for half the charges and for the lazy renters, we put a chain across the dumpster so the lids couldn't be opened, locked it and I added a sign on it that said "Unless you are paying for the privilege, do not put your trash in this dumpster!"

Both solutions worked for us.

BRP, your dumpster and your yard are YOURS. You shouldn't have to put up with people taking advantage of your good nature. I look at things from this POV. We try to be a good neighbor. We do not trespass on others property unless We have permission. We do not remove things from our neighbors property and expect the same consideration from our neighbors. We do not play loud music or entertain large, noisy parties. We do not run ATVs across property lines. We try to help out our neighbors whenever the need arises. In other words we try our darnedest to be good neighbors and we expect no less from those around us.

Sounds like you are being a lot better neighbor than those around you.

I would just start with the sign. If it doesn't work, I would actually consider the real cameras. They were showing footage on the news of people dumping--license plate numbers and all! It's strange....I have always put MY trash in MY dumpster. People are amazing! There was one guy who lived across the alley from the dumpster. He would roll his trash can over to the dumpster and dump it. The city includes the trash with the taxes, so it isn't like he was paying extra for them to come across the alley to pick up his trash! Shaking my head....

It's Illegal to sell my wood because I got it off Government Land. I better stay on Good Graces with the Forester. Found we had cut our wood on the wrong place but he said it needed cutting and we wasn't tearing anything up, just don't do it again.

Ok I say Camp Ground but where these people are they moved regular House Trailers in and have been renting the Lots for years, they know where they are suppose to be. They only come on weekends during Fishing Season.

There is a Dumpster for them to use by the Office and they know where it is.

Even better. Send a registered letter to campground manager. Register ALL your complaints and he should pass it on to the residents. If they do not comply, he should evict them. If not, he is liable.
