You will need a passport or an enhanced drivers license( if you live in a border state), the rules changed a couple of years ago.

LOCALS who travel thru both the east coast Canadian and Mich border and the west coast Canadian us border say that over the past few years the west coast folks are really making the crossing a pain. The claim is the delays in searches. These are elderly persons with very stable back ground.

Even if you do the ferry you have to go through customs. You also have to drive some of the worst roads on the ALCAN.

If I had the urge to head up..... I would drive up and ferry down. Cross into Canada at Sweetgrass MT.

It has been years but I took the ferry in Bellingham to Juneau and avoided border issues. From Juneau one can ferry to many ports. Back then my passport was current it has been expired for years. I did the drive and hand no issues in 94& 96&98. With so many snowbirds who have been doing the drive for up to 20 years every year their tales of trailers ransacked for the last year really makes me shy about the passage at the border.

I mean I blow off the complaints from folks who have had dwi s or legal issues. Those folk worked to earn the hassles.

When crossing the border make sure that your prescription meds are in pharmacy containers and properly labelled with your name etc. Our friends came through and had decided to save weight and space (huh?) by dumping all their meds into a zip lock bag. They really got to know the Canadian Border Patrol lol!

It is also important to remember that Canadian Universal Healthcare applies to Canadians. If you get sick or injured you or your insurance will have to pay. At the hospital in Whitehorse there is a sign outlining the fees. An emergency visit starts with a $600 basic fee. If you run out of your prescription meds you can go to the emergency center in a hospital and they will help you but it will be an expensive refill given the basic fee.
