It seams to me that some time ago, I heard that putting baby oil in a pond would prevent the mosquito eggs from hatching. Has anyone else heard of this or tried it? Would it affect the frog and turtles in the pond?

I would not put oil in the pond. That would kill many beneficial insects and other things you want like dragonflies.

Quick tip! Don't eat bananas! Trust me, we go camping up in the mountains and whoever eats bananas gets eaten alive and whoever does not has a lot less bites. Its a proven fact.

We're having pretty good luck with Garlic Oil. You mix it with liquid soap, water and vegetable oil and spray it on your grass. We also found citronella oil mixed with Eucalyptus oil works really well spread on exposed skin. It also repels noseums. They land on your arm and immediately take off.

Two suggestions:

1) mosquito traps around the house (google it - easy to make, sugar water, coke bottle and yeast

2) Build a bat house near by - they really cut down on the little buggers.

This is me!
And it works.
Very, very well.

No oils to stain clothes because it is a distillate.
You can drink it.
And it keeps the mosquitoes, gnat, noseeums etc.. far, far away.

This thread talks all about it as well.

Help, Chickenista! I'm being eaten alive!

I will have all of the orders shipped out on Monday and ready for more orders.
You don't have to be bitten.
I haven't had a bite in a couple of years now.
I can garden at dusk with pleasure.

Put out bird feeders. The birds will come and eat the mosquitoes.

I bought a mosquito Magnet (patriot model) two weeks ago and its trapped about 4 pop can full of mosquitos so far. So its killed thousands. Those won't be laying eggs. So it should get better and better over time.

There are some perennial garden flowers and herbs that mosquitoes and black flies don't like to be around, so if you don't already have them growing now then you could plant some of them for next year. Mosquitoes will avoid areas where the plants are growing so it's good to plant them nearby your house and wherever you spend a lot of time outside - also you can rub the fresh leaves on your skin - or infuse some leaves/flowers in oil and rub the oil on yourself.

They are yellow loosestrife, rose geranium, lemon grass, lemon balm, bee balm, peppermint, catnip, rosemary, garlic, savory, tarragon and thyme.

Yellow loosestrife is particularly effective and has been used for centuries to calm farm animals like oxen and horses that were plagued by mosquitoes and biting flies. Garlands or stems of loosestrife leaves and flowers were attached to their yokes and harnesses to repel the insects. Farmers would also dry and then burn loosestrife as a smoke smudge around their homes and barns to drive off insects. That is how loosestrife got its name - it is a helpful plant to "lose strife" from biting insects. It does not repel bees and butterflies.

I was pleasantly surprised by Off Clip On. Someone bought it for me because they know I am a mosquito magnet. Tried it last weekend and was really surprised that it worked.

I put the cart before the horse and bought some water lilies before I built the water garden. Oh, well. Now they reside in an old tub that held cattle protein supplement--holds about 20 gallons of water.

A couple of days ago I noticed mosquito larvae in the tub when I was looking at a bud forming on one lily. I thought I needed to get out the mosquito dunks and put a pinch in the tub. Never got around to it but this morning, I saw something swimming in the water that were huge compared to the larvae. Looked more closely and it was a bunch of small tadpoles--and nary a mosquito larvae to be found.

Of course, one day soon, I'll be admiring the lily only to have an adult frog jump from the tub and give me heart failure.

Does anyone know if this is safe to use around dogs and chickens?
This stuff works great. I buy a 40 pound bag each year, but I probably over-use it. http://www.arbico-organics.com/produ...xHlSNaa2_w_wcB

Bats, Dragon flies and frogs in the pond.

we had a billion of them until we put a small frog pond, 3 feet long, 2.5 feet deep plastic thing from home depot. The frogs moved in and soon we had dragon flies and 1/5th as many mosquitoes.

we bought some bug spray that actually works, and claims to be "all natural" http://www.walgreens.com/store/c/cut...3-000042324351 .

I have used it for two days now. When I go out to the barn there is always a swarm of bugs flying in circles in the sunny areas. I used to get 2 or 3 of them in my eyeballs every time I went out there, now it is like I am Moses and they are the red sea. Sat outside with 10 people last night for 4 hours, all used the bug spray, none complained of bugs and we have billions.
