Wegman's has a good selection of many specialty foods, but I'm unimpressed with their prices. They hang their hat on their variety which seems to work for them. That leaves the local supermarkets to offer screaming deals to carve out their niches as value based grocers.

It doesn't really matter to me...I only rely on them for anything that I do not raise/grow and freeze/can/smoke, which honestly isn't all that much...

Only one we have around here is Costco and that over an hour away LOL

I think Win-CO is coming to a town near Costco. I dont care for the store.

Never have been able to figure out why people like Trader Joe's?

Locally a Walmart built in our town maybe 5 years ago.

I like the store, but rarely go to the grocery side of the building.

Seems the same with most others in town, rumor is they are not doing well on the grocery side.....

The local High Vee and Cashwise are open 24 hours, have been for decades, and supply a lot bigger store of groceries and selections than the Walmart does.

Walmart closes at 11:00pm, odd for a town that is based on 2 big employers that run 3 shifts. Whatever.

Cashwise is really good. High Vee is pretty good. target has very small grocery section, Walmart just doesn't look inviting on their grocery side at all. Heck I buy more 'groceries' at Menards lumber store than I do at Walmart, Menards has the cheapest Wheaties and Dinty Moore type stews than any of the rest.

Trader Joes 1.5 hrs away, been there once just passing through Portland. Might go more if it was a 1/2 hr away
Have been to Wegmans in Ithica, NY. Son was a student there.
Liked the store for quality goods and especially the eat in feature where you can try all kinds of different cuisine.
The others on the list are mostly non existent here as far as i know.
We have Hannaford Bros which is pretty good compared to walmart for produce and Shaws is their main competitor grocery store
nebula5 and TheMartianChick like this.

..............I've come to believe that IF , W. Mt. didn't have low prices their sales would just fall into the basement ! Most highly rated chain stores MUST have higher markups on their prices or they would simply go out of business.........none will ever be able to compete with W.M. because they simply cannot purchase the quantities that W. M. does . , fordy

+1 on HEB, a very good store and getting better, Trader Joe's an interesting place and good for select items, I find Aldi a little limited and the same goes for Sprouts. I actually quite like Costco, we buy a lot in the grocery line there and both quality and price are quite good.

Smith's foods, is located in the west [NM to UT] is pretty good, and they have excellent prices. They are owned by Kroger, and you can buy gift cards and save up to $1/gal on gas! Really like them

They also have good selection of markdowns in every store. Virtually never pay full price for anything since I shop the reduced items end cap.

HEB in TX is really nice, but fairly high. Very clean though, and LOTS of help and checkouts opened.

I know about some of those groceries by watching the grocery haul videos on youtube, but none of those top stores are local here. There's a Trader Joe's and a Costco in Louisville but I'm about an hour from there, so that's not going to happen.

So, are most of the top groceries located in densely populated areas and could that be a reason why they make the preference listing? Around here you'll find a Krogers, a Walmart, IGA, Sav-a-Lot, and a few small market types.

I was happy to see Winco on the list. I love ours - great prices, good selection...you do bag your own groceries. They are employee owned and have really good benefits, especially their health care insurance. My ddil works there, too, so I get to visit with her when I go grocery shopping!

None of those stores are near us. We only have Food Lion. It is ok, we can drive about an hour aand get to Kroger and Trader Joes. They are at opposite ends so cant even get to both of them on the same day.
We do have a very small Walmart, but they burned their bridges with me yesterday, so that was the last time we will shop there. And anyway their veggies are awful.
We used to have HT but they closed several years ago..

Let Kroger buy them and they won't be worth walking into
Why's that? Kroger here is great. I can get way better deals than anywhere close by.
