Erin -- which cell provider? Our fiber optic is $58.00 a month with 3 MG download, unlimited. I looked into Att&t, but theirs was $60.00 and not unlimited.

Viaero.
It's a regional carrier out of Ft. Morgan, CO. They only cover the eastern half or so of Colorado, the majority of Nebraska, and the northwestern corner of Kansas. (Standard cell phones have data roaming out of the area of course, but the home-connect boxes don't.)

Honestly, if I'd had that kind of speed at $58 a month, I never would have gone shopping. In fact, it wasn't even the speed that irritated me about satellite, but rather the limits on downloads. This is the 21st century for Pete's sake!
Pig is right that this is completely determined by money, rather than technology.

Sure. Companies whose business model is to scalp rural residents for what is essentially a utility don't sit well with me.

I'm not sure I agree that they are scalping. I believe the cost to provide satellite is more than across copper. That additional cost gets passed along.

Let's take Dish as an example. It costs the same if you live in Seattle as it does for me out in the sticks. And apparently they are competitive based on the number of Dish antennas I see in the city.

And for internet, if you live in the city and just have internet via Comcast (largest provider in Seattle) it costs about the same as what I pay for Exede. It is about $60 per month. Is Exede as good as Comcast? No way but that is the nature of two way satellite based systems. Nasty little reality called latency.

Specifically about Hughes, I had it for 5 years. The modem is still on my desk and the dish is still outside. It started good and got progressively slower. Their customer service sucks. Exede came out and I promptly switched. Hughes came out with a new service that is supposed to be pretty good although I haven't seen it. I probably would not go back to them just based on the bad customer service.

I've been on Exede for about a year and it is good. My installer lives in OSO where the landslide was. He has always treated me right. I do wish I had something better like Comcast but they don't offer service out here. Way too far from town for DSL. Satellite is my best option and it seems like a fair price to pay for a service that works almost anywhere.

Yep, Hughsnet stinks. Several years ago our system went out, and it took 3 weeks to get a tech out here. I asked for credit, as we didn't have access to their system. They refused. We had Discover Card tap their account for the amount, and told them to take a hike (or something to that effect).

Centurylink here is $39.95 for DSL.

Copper is certainly FAR more expensive to maintain and implement than satellite...

You hughesnet connection got slower over time because they were throttling your speed. You should read the fine print... Comcast costs the same as exede but the service is way different.

DSL is satellite... not sure what you're going on about sorry.

You're thinking of the term "broadband" which does refer to satellite, cell, DSL, etc., etc.

DSL is technically a wired service. (though we used to live 15 miles from pavement, 80 miles from Walmart, and 150 miles from a mall and STILL had excellent DSL via our local, rural phone company)

We are about twice your speed on fiber optic that you-all paid for with a stimulus package at about $10,000 per household. Yes, that is what it cost - the contractors gave me the rough estimate of 300 homes at about $3,000,000. I asked for a new garage instead of the fiber optic, but no dice.

But the speed you have is plenty good. It is faster than our old DSL, which was fine as far as I was concerned.

You might have two for dish hd because they had difficulty getting line of sight on the one.. IF anyone has questions I am a Dish Technician.

That's satellite? And is it unlimited?

(I think most of us know there are better ISPs out there. )

The USA is now one of if not the slowest in the world as far as internet speeds.~!
This is being documented that in some places in the world speeds are up and over 100Mbps
This government of ours can't sen to get behind the movement and over up the speed for intent use. They have been limiting speed now for years especially on telephone ones for good fast DLS service.

Hughesnet sucks.... but it sucks way way less than dialup....

We're currently looking at either a cell based wireless system (if we can get a line of sight signal), at half of our Hughesnet cost, or a wireless tower (like the old ham radio towers) with unlimited 3mbs service... but at the same price as we're paying now....

Yeah, I can pretty much guarantee anyone who had access to unlimited cable would NOT be using satellite (or cell). lol
