I HATE those dusk to dawn lights too - it just reminds me of country folk wanting to appear to be city people.

When we first moved to our place, my Father-in-law insisted we put one up at the barn. I always figured the light was a way for any would be crooks to see where they are going.

It finally quit working - and I haven't replaced it. If you come to our house after dark - you better have a good reason for it. There are no outside lights on at all - so you can trip around and stumble at your own risk.

When we first moved to our house 23 years ago, I could look out over the horizens at night and see nothing. Now 23 years years later, I can now see at least 5 dawn to dusk lights that are miles away from me.

I always figured with no lights - anybody coming around to look around is going to have to have a flashlight - which will certainly let me spot them or my dogs spot them.

If you don't have any neighbors close by, or any way other than your driveway to access your property, I'd look more into a driveway alarm.

I just recently had the power company come and install the dusk-to-dawn security light. It will cost me $10 per month and they keep it maintained. (I hate it!)

Still, it does light up a large portion of the barn, chicken house and a portion of the back yard and front hard. Since My place is completely fenced and I have only one entrance with 2 large "outside" guard dogs, I figure the dogs will alert me, the gate will cause intruders some problems and the light will let me see what it is that is intruding. (I had the light placed on the opposite side of the power pole so it cannot be shot out unless the intruder has already found a way across 2 acres of land in the back to shoot it.)

I sure like the "Dakota Alert System" and may actually get one of those for the drive!

I am wanting some type of motion-detector light that will shine in 3 areas in the back part of my place (behind the barn, in the orchard and in the back pasture). Am thinking "solar" may be best for this, though not sure.

Thanks to OP for starting this thread.

Another vote here for the Dakota MURS system. Used it for years, not 100% perfect, but the best I've found after using several different alarms. One of the sensors is a magnetic probe you bury in, or beside, the driveway, and only vehicle mass will set it off, so you don't have the problem of deer, etc.

No 'security' lights on my place....they provide a false sense of security, IMHO. Several motion detector lights and lights I can control with a switch.
