Ordinary spiders don't bother me, but I am reluctant to tote a single log into the house because I sure don't need to be dripping a trail of Brown Recluses...

I think you have a movie script here! Scary x 100. If I had this happen I would spray it with something very deadly and then cover real good with a tarp or plastic - that would fix them.
But, where I live, nothing poisonous lives. Actually hardly anything lives through our winters. No hurricanes, no poison snakes or spiders, no killer bees, just lots of subzero and snow from Nov through mid-April.
