My guess would be mice or voles. I am always finding acorns/sunflower seeds/dog kibble/ stashed in the weirdest places. Including a pair of muddy sneakers left on the back porch overnight. I know we have both in abundance around the homestead. It's almost a game to see where they are going to hide their stash next.

We finally resorted to TomCat bait holders. Problem not gone but definitely under control.

I'm with you about the smell of mouse in the house. I can't stand it either. Our homestead reeked of rodents when we bought it. It took almost a year to get things under control.

5 years later I still don't understand how the previous owners lived with the smell.

I've had a mouse take a double-handful of hazelnuts from the kitchen through two rooms and store in an antique dresser with drawers that were a little warped. And one that liked that cat litter from husks of some kind. Moved same amount between two layers of blankets waiting for washing when the sun was out.

Its more of a joke than anything. And we do set lots of traps and always catch them, but more always find their way in. We need a cat.
Patchouli likes this.

Small dogs will hide their food sometimes too.
