I was on Nexium for 4 years with GERD - it is not intended for long term use and it shuts down all acid production which interferes with nutrient absorption and also causes severe rebound heartburn once you stop taking it. I weaned myself off slowly over 6 months and started taking probiotics. That was enough to replace the Nexium, but once we cut out processed foods (including vegetable oils and most grains) my digestion is the best it has been in my whole life!! Once you start eating real food you won't want to go back to standard store bought/processed food. Good luck!

Had it for years. Took purple pill. Did not help, just masked the pain.
Tried Aloa Vera Gel, about 1 tablespoon twice a day. It works. Took about 10 days for my throat and stomach to heal. After all Aloa is for burns. Now do not take anything for over a year.

I have real questions in this area. I'm not a doctor or expert at all. But my wife has issues with this. What I noticed is it happens almost all the time after she eats certain foods. Once she stops eating them the problem lessens, She take DGL which is licorice root extract. One thing I believe in & have seen work with great effectiveness is taking HCL after meals. Heart burn is basically caused by not having enough good HCL in your stomach to digest your food. Where heat burn comes from is the acid that is formed by food rotting in your stomach. My wife stopped her heart burn this way years ago. Her issues today is a medication she needs to heal a wound plus some foods like sour cream just don't agree.

I had acid reflux since my late 20's. In my 30's I had an endoscopy and they suspected Barrett's Esophagus, but the biopsy came back negative. They put me on that purple pill. I did not take it, I am not into treating symptoms. I changed my diet to vegan and the acid reflux went away 100% within 2 weeks. After a year, I slowly added back grass-fed organic meats, dairy(raw) and organic pastured eggs (only on the weekends) - I only use meat and dairy that comes from our CSA farm. I cut out most processed food, and what I do use is very minimally processed (like organic flour, sugar, pasta, grains)

What I learned from trial and error: Sugar causes my acid reflux, worse if it is combined with grain. example: I can eat steel cut oatmeal with milk and am fine, if I add brown sugar, honey or even artificial sweetener, I get symptoms. I can eat dark chocolate or homemade ice cream made with sugar just fine. If I eat a cookie(sugar and grain), I will get symptoms. I can have coffee with sugar and am fine.

Greasy food can(not always) cause symptoms, so I stay away.

Eating out: anything other than a dry salad will cause symptoms 90% of the time.

When I stick to eating organic fruits and veggies(though fresh squeezed orange and grapefruit juice will cause my symptoms, I can eat the fruit with no problem), making meals at home and stay away from grain and sugar combinations, my symptoms are gone. I love spicy food and eat it, as long as it is not greasy, I am fine. The last 2 endoscopies I had were clear.

Good luck, I hope you can find a solution without taking drugs that have side effects as bad or worse than the symptom.

Janna

ps: after reading the posts here, I am going to add some unfiltered apple cider vinegar daily. I use it on my hair as a rinse, with great results, so why not give it a try

Aloe Vera juice is what we use if needed. It helps to balance the acid in the stomach and helps to heal the lining of the esophagus. DO NOT take if you are pregnant. though. They have regular and fruit flavored. Sold at health food stores and at Walmart on occasion.

Stopped eating wheat, stopped having acid reflux. Not just me either, 4 other people I know...same thing. Wheat is an inflammatory, read Wheat Belly or at least go to the blog and it explains much better than I can here. Blessings, Kat

I agree with the wheat, over weight and over eating. But I also think our diet in general is just awful. We are eating everything dead, everything cooked and over processed. Try adding kefir, or kombucha, eat more green leafy alive foods. I feel the best when I eat 75% raw fruits and vegetables, give it a try shouldn't hurt you.. I won't give up meat, but we raise most of what we eat, that helps too I believe.
