BTW, I'm sort of from Texas.. lived there 9 years or so... You won't ever catch me Q'ing or smoking meat without Mesquite..
I'm tempted to try it really.

But I'd put it in some apple cider vinegar with the mother, add a touch of whey from goat milk, and let it ferment for about a week. That adds such a nice flavor to all salsas.

Any raw tomato weather ripe or unripe will cause my throat to swell. But if I cook them I have no problems. So no fresh salsa for me. I've always wondered why but it sounds like the problem is solanine. Learn something new everyday.

I couldn't care any less if they ARE toxic.
There is nothing they can say about tomatoes that will even slow me down.
Die happy!! that's what I say!

I put about 3 green tomatoes, cut up, in each stir fry. There is NO stir fry mix in the freezer section of any store that can match the flavor that the green tomatoes add.

I suppose if a guy ate 30 of them it might kill him. Then again, if he drank 2 or 3 gallons of water he would die from that too. Excess of many things can kill.

I guess we learn that people have different reactions to it and that moderation might be key when consuming green tomatoes. (It would probably be really hard if not impossible to eat enough of them do have a significant adverse effect.) And again, fried green tomatoes are delicious.

I grew up eagerly awaiting those first green tomatoes that reached a size sufficient to fry up and have for dinner. Good memories and a tradition that lingers on to this day.

I also remember eating and really enjoying a green tomato relish that my mom canned every fall when she salvaged the last of the little green tomatoes off pulled plants.

Never had an adverse reaction to green tomatoes.

As for getting canker sores from eating too many ripe tomatoes, yep been there done that. Solution for me was to plant a few low acid yellow or pink tomatoes to enjoy if the mouth sores kicked in. Might want to give it a try.

Well, yes, everything's toxic if you take it too far. Yes, plants do try and prevent us from eating them at the wrong stage so as to maximize their seed spread.

I had a friend who almost died of eating apples. She sat in a tree, as a child, eating apples all day long while reading a book. Just about killed her. She said that she could not eat normally for about a year because of the damage the acids did to her stomach.

Water is toxic if you over consume. Over drinking water causes Hyponatremia which is an imbalance in electrolytes that can kill you and has killed people. (Think frat house initiations.)

Green tomatoes are not toxic in the quantities I would expect most people to eat.

Everything in moderation.

Florida picks green tomatoes and shoots them with something to make them ripen in the trucks they move them north in. If you can eat all of the crap they put on your fruit and in your meat, you're going to worry about a little green tomato? Crazy! LOL

There's a lot more to worry about - folks have been eating green tomatoes forever and I even bake a green tomato bread that is famous in this area! Eat them fried and love them! SMH....

lots of people consider all tomato and tomato relatives toxic..and then there are those that make all kinds of exciting dishes out of raw green tomatoes..as well as out of watermelon rinds..and other wierd things like that..so guess you have to just guess? Even too much spinach can be toxic to your liver..

everything in moderation?

Here is a close copy to my recipe. I am in Kentucky and am iced in. We haven't left the house since Sunday.... Can't get up the hill in the driveway! 4 inches of ice and a little snow put this town in a sad state!

The bakery isn't that close and all my recipes are up there! Try this recipe and don't tell people what in it and let them guess. I hand out samples at the farmer's market and people cannot believe it's got green tomatoes in it! We put pecans in it too and it's delish!
