If something bad happens I stand a better chance of pulling through unscathed. Bad isn't always a disaster, it could be getting fired or being wiped out financially, then that store being 20 minutes away doesn't help a bit anyway.

The other day I bought a $150 office chair for $7. Problem is it came with 20 or so more. Would I be a hoarder? Hoping to sell them for at least a $1 a piece when the weather turns good.

You hang a sign on the front gate saying "NEED FOOD" and or save some expired foods, buggy flour and puffy cans to share.

Kind of hard to argue with that. That is some fairly ancient wisdom.

What?
This is a discussion board. That means its entire purpose is the back and forth exchange of opinions.
If you post something on a discussion board, it's now open to the back and forth exchange. That's how boards like this work...

Just this week I've saved $22 buying what's on sale.
I knew I'd need to buy dog food this week. I thought the monthly sale would be this week end. I kinda planned for it. Buying this way saves $50 a year. So this week just on those 2 items I saved $72 on an annual basis.

Thank you, haven't laughed that hard in a while!
Very happy I am well stocked up as we are getting 8-12 inches of snow tomorrow, my usual go to town day. And no one takes care of our roads out here. And I haven't been to town in 3 weeks. The only problem is cheese, somehow we are out of cheese. But I'm sure we will survive another week without cheese!

My 92 yr old cousin called me yesterday from the city where she lives. She said she hasn't been outside the seniors residence where she lives since the middle of October 2013 as the weather has been so bad! This is an apt complex and not a care home. She does her own shopping and cooking. Her last time out she had a ride and brought back enough groceries to last her until Spring! She stores them in the closet, under the bed, in the end tables which have storage underneath and doors. She also cleared some cupboard space for canned goods. My cousin grew up in the city but her mother grew up on a farm and taught her how to plan ahead and preserve food. This lady also walks the halls on three different floors of the building everyday for exercise and uses a a stretch exercise band to stay strong. In good weather she pulls her two wheeled cart and walks to the store. In case the power goes out she has blankets, flash light. and drinking water stored. I expect to be talking to her when she turns a 100 yrs she is so healthy and self-sufficient!
As for my husband and I stocking up every six months for staples; such as flour, oats, dates , raisins, sun-flower and olive oils, yeast, honey, toilet paper, Borax for washing, dish liquid and dog/cat food ;is a way of life. Everything else we eat comes from the garden or grows wild, and animals for meat and eggs.
I started this six months shopping when we lived on the island Light House Keeping. as it was too hard coming off and getting groceries back there especially in the winter. Now we are nine miles from a grocery store or natural food store where I buy flour etc. We don't have a vehicle. When winter comes ,as it did harder this year than in the past several years, we know we can live for months on end and eat well. Even if the flour etc runs out there is still vegetables, meat and eggs.
When we reach an age where we no longer can live this way we will be like my 92 yr old cousin and stocking food and water away in an apt somewhere! It can be done.

If everyone lived debt free, then we would insist political leaders do the same with public spending. Unfortunately, borrowing and debt is the norm, so many people expect government to do the same. Your neighbor is a perfect example. I personally think the cost of items would drop drastically once debt was removed. (Sorry about the thread drift)

Answer: The Great Depression
Those of us that either lived it or had parents that lived it and stressed the importance of stocking up will stock up. Others will not.
My parents, being quite old when I was born, lived it and taught this concept.

4 years ago I was in an accident that left me in a wheelchair for 5 months. We had a lot of "stuff"...the person that caused the accident had no insurance, and no money. I had health insurance, but they had recently changed it, and it really put us in debt with high deductibles, co-pays, and no covering a lot of bills--I WORKED IN THE SAME HOSPITAL I WAS TREATED IN!!! I was one of those "it could never happen to me" people. Well it did. And if anyone thinks it couldn't happen to them they are crazy!
We had it "all"--nice cars, camper, money, etc...we got down to $4.00 in my pocket and no food, and kids to feed. We lost just about everything. If you think the food pantries, salvation army, or other sources will take care of all of your needs in this scenario people are also mistaken.
Long story short, I now buy ahead and am very, very frugal. I can now imagine why the depression made the older generation the way they are...fear.
I am now considered very "odd" for my position on preparing, growing my own, stocking a pantry, views on the prices of food, etc. etc....
I NEVER want to be in that position again..ever...unless you ARE or have ever had to go through that, you can't even begin to imagine what it does to your mental state of being.
***edited to add: Although this was a terrible thing to go through--I do not ever want to go back to the way I was before---I and my children have never been happier, and it makes you appreciate so many more things in life..and it taught me just what was truly important, and what doesn't matter.

Glad you made it through. I also work in medicine and see so many people financially destroyed by illness and accidents. This is one of the main reasons I stock-up. While I do think about national/global SHTF scenario's a medical one is much more likely to happen.

I had all the SHTF emergencies, major accidents, long snow storms and raising children alone. lol I always stock up. If my freezer starts to get lagging, we just stop raising that meat till its eaten. And having extra stuff in the freezer is a good thing. even if it was slight freezer burnt its still edible in a real emergency. and dont forget animals will need to eat also. Chickens and dogs can stay fed on my excess items. I do not buy chicken feed. we can most all our veggies.
I get last years deer and wild game from my hunter friends. my dog lives it up. My german shepherd lived to 17, healthy to the last day. Vet wondered which dog food I fed her. She lives on zucchini and deer meat, along with other scraps...lol
It may not be just emergencies that call you to need more food stored. I was just given a free vacation, as their friend backed out. all expense paid for a whole week. Instead of buying food for here, while Im away, Im buying me some new cloths to take with
