The obvious answer to that is a whole-house softener but we did not have the money for that in addition. Also, at the time, we did not have the electrical service for an electric on-demand. Now, we do have that service.

Right now the solution is a sign taped inside our shower that says "5 MINUTES". That was a fairly cheap fix!
honestly we had hard water... we also had an electric water heater, every six years the heating element would burn up, what would happen is the iron would settle out in the heater and the element would overheat! We would replace the element, and clean all that nasty iron muck that smells like rotten eggs, that stuff is nasty!

Now hopefully you do flush your heater, being gas, that would be the only way to prevent bulidup.

FS (Farm Services) showed up today per our contract with them and put 450 gallons in our 1000 gallon tank, at Spring prices, so the shortage must be over?

Well, things change everyday, there has been a major explosion on a pipeline running through KY. It brings 1.3 Trillion cubic feet of gas/yr from the South to the Northeast.
Left a 60 ft crater, took out 2 houses, injured 2 people, and the initial blast scorched 5 acres. Looks like propane prices may be going back up.We'll see I guess.

Blooba, in that article it said the pipeline carried methane gas. Would that affect the propane price? Also, here in so. WI our price hasn't gone down. Will be paying in excess of $4.00 per gallon for 200 gallons. It will be the old "rob Peter to pay Paul" scenario...

Methane is Natural Gas, Natural Gas and propane use the same pipelines, not sure if this pipe was used for propane also but even if it isn't they will have to make up for it on other pipelines.

These pipelines fed storage in WV and OH so as long as they have plenty of gas stored it maybe a delayed shortage although I have a feeling the storage supplies were already low.

I don't really understand this, we have a contract, through Farm Services, we pay it in the Spring and our price stays the same all year, regardless of how much we use. Are there not places like FS in most places in the US where you can get a contract, pay up front, or monthly as some have said they do, and not have to worry about price gouging??

Yes, I think there are. I've always thought it was only for rented tanks, however; that you can't get a contract when you own your tank. I have not actually asked our provider though.

FS is a friggin monopoly, never support them, they are everywhere and try to drive out the competition. Not only in farm chem/application, but also gas stations, they buy out small independent locally owned stations, slap up their ugly sign, and close the station six months later.

My great great uncle operated his chem/app buisness for over 40 years, with four locations, held off those FS bastards! Finally became a crop production services franchise, due to age, FS is in bed with corporate farming!

My uncle with the support of the local farmers made a good living, treated his workers well. Only had problems with the meth heads, trying to get anhydrous ammonia.

I own my 500 gal tank. When I call around looking for the best price, they always try to get me on a yearly contract.

I have never gotten gas at an FS, there is no FS in my area that sells gas, or FS gas stations! We have a Casey's which has bought out the local privately owned gas station here and in the next town over though.

United Prairie seems to be the big ag seller around here.

Calm down, my goodness!

Depends on where you live. I've lived where some Farm/Ag company ran a flat-rate service, but only for farm/ag customers... consumers paid retail. I've lived where some Farm/Ag company ran a flat-rate service for any customer... only non-contracts paid retail. I've lived where a commercial/private company ran a flat-rate service, farm/ag contracts got better rates but they did contract to all customers... only non-contracts paid retail. I've lived where Farm/Ag or commercial/private companies only offered contrct fill if you rented their tanks and you got a discount of current retail... farm/ag customers could get rebates through the gov't program. And I've lived where the company didn't give any discount and the only thing having a contract and renting a tank meant was that you'd get filled before non-contract customers.

Around here, in the past Ten years we have had Four companies getting into propane service.

Companies that have operated for years here are:
Amerigas(bought out Petrolane)
and Ferrel gas

FS (with their fancy new facility in a industrial park)
Electric Co-Op spun off a propane business
Owner of Six Citgo gas stations got into propane
and a small ma and pop joint, they have 50 500 gal tanks in their homes yard.

So there must be money to be made in this. We are a low populated area, even with some (usually rare in the country side) natural gas service.

Been spooked since first reading this as I had just had some delivered when this went down.

Basically a shop that I spend little time in. Had it filled ( 350 gallon tank) 3 years back and was some $750. Life changes and it has lasted.

Called and asked for 100 gallons ( was down to 20%). Was told that the minimum was 125 and I said fine.

Then I got to seeing all of this and wondered.

Finally got the bill and perhaps I barely missed the increase ... 1/22 delivery of 125 gallons at $2.599 in NE GA. How is this running out for you now?

Average prices in Wisconsin have been falling from what I've seen. Still higher than normal but getting back into the manageable range.

01/20 2.276
01/27 4.490
02/03 3.945
02/10 3.686
02/17 3.344
02/24 estimated around $3.25

information from the energy information administration. what I've been hearing from "the boots on the ground" is that the week of 01/27 it could be higher than $7 in some areas and now can be found for $2.50 in remote places around here.

It's back down again, for us too.
At Christmas it was $1.67, the end of January it was $3.29, but two days ago it was back down to $2.60-something.
We managed to avoid a fill when it was over $5!

still outrageous in northern WI. I paid $4.39 for 100 gallons last week. I also purchased an electric heater and told my propane supplier to take me off the "keep fill" program and put me on the "I'll call when I need some" program.
Seems they love to fill up ones tank with the overpriced propane in the waning days of winter.

Hopefully, I have enough to get me though until the warm months.

This summer, I'll either buy my own tank......or buy a pellet stove......or both.

Funny you say that, growing up at home my parents would get ------ when they would fill up the propane tank "unexpectedly" and find a bill on the door knob!

I need to call Amerigas again and check their price. We haven't been running the furnace but our water heater is gas and it's been creeping the gauge down further. We avoided the $5 gas by using electric space heaters for the last few weeks.
