Paul,

Talk to me about how that tree is being cut. With a first cut that deep, it looks like it will fall the away from the cut not into it. That is opposite of what I am used to. What is that orange thing leaning against the tree? That's pretty gutsy parking the 4 wheeler and trailer that close. I'm never that confident on where it is going.

BTW, I really enjoy your podcasts. And Jack's too.

There are a lot of older members on this board, as well as some with physical problems. A UTV may enable them to do things they can't otherwise or even stay on their farms.

We have both tractors and a small truck--they don't do the same things a utv does. There are places in the mountains that are not easy or safe with a small truck, that are with a 4 or 6 wheel drive utv. I would not make judgements about what people do with their money when you have no facts.
You are right Molly, and for those exact reasons!! We went to look at the Gator again to day. It is an 07, that is in pristine condition. You could eat off the engine.....well mybe not THAT pristine!! LOL We also went to look at some golf carts that had been set up with a lift package, bigger wheels, lights, and a back seat/flat bed. It is nice but costs more than the JD, and is electric. I dont think it would make it up and down our hills, especially after it rained.

We have until monday to think about it........

here is my take if it is a used atv then it has been abused you will see what I mean after you get yours. they are used to go places were you wont even walk. If it is used for farm stuff they are usually loaded to more than the max. If you buy used make sure you are near a dealership as I am willing to bet you are goanna need service. and as far as being clean it is amazing what a pressure washer will do. Be careful with a used atv.

That's a pretty broad paintbrush you are painting with Dave. I've bought and sold several used ATVs and have been very pleased. You just need to know what to look for. The last one I bought was a 2008 Honda Rancher with 42 miles on it. I got it for $2,500 less than a new one.

I didn't say there weren't deals out there and 42 miles is good. but I am saying generally they have been used very hard. just saying and if you own one then you know what I am saying you must see your friends using them.

I think you will find a UTV a wonderful addition to your tractor. They get about an equal workout on our place (which we are currently building. While the tractor can do much more with all the implements, the UTV (we have a diesel Gator) can do a lot too. We're restoring a run off creek bank and while hubby uses the tractor to move the dozed brush piles and trees into burn piles, I've been hauling downed trees out of the woods with a chain attached to the Gator frame to add to the piles. Not to mention firewood, the hydraulic dump bed, hauling over rough terrain, moving rocks... while of course the tractor can do those same things, the Gator is more comfortable and more efficient at them.

I know we're talking about UTVs, but I have a 2001 Polaris Sportsman 500 that I've converted into a UTV of sorts. I've removed the back cargo rack and built a cargo bed out of 3/4" treated plywood, including a tailgate. Inside and outside of this bed are several tie-downs and holders for different tools. Works well for me.

We have a Polaris ranger. I was totally against paying the outrageous price for one but after the winter we have had I would not trade it for nothing. We live in a hilly rural area and lets just say when the ice came it wasn't the four wheel drive truck getting us out it was the Polaris. We can ride the narrow ditches out here that the trucks don't fit in. I used it for about ten days getting back and forth to work and that thing is actually lots cheaper on gas so its my baby now!!

Mine has hauled firewood to the house all winter. Even starts good at -20. It is a Kabota. The smaller gas one RTV 500 I think.

Around here a lot of folks buy Japanese mini trucks, kei truck. They are the size roughly of a side by side ATV. Have 4wd with lockers. Are legal on back roads.

Have roll up windows, heaters, fold down sides on the beds. Some have dump beds.

The Japanese tax structure makes them basically surplus when they are 10 years old.
Dealers abound.
Here is a new one.

We got the used Gator last week. We have already used it for a bunch of things. DH just loves it!! We can carry 8 bales of hay without any problem. It just powers up the hill!!
He also carried gates and fence building equipment just as easily. We got a good deal less than 4000 and it runs like a dream, barely makes any noise at all when it is running. It has 272 hours on it, but it runs great and smooth, so I think we got a good deal.
Was talking with our minor league baseball teams GM, and it is very possible it was their Gator. THey just traded thiers in for a bigger one.. If that is the case it is hardly used and then only to carry dirt, drying compound and on flat level ground. No wonder it looks so good!!!
We are very happy

while I always advise to buy a new machine it isn't because there aren't good deals out there. I just don't want to steer someone toward trouble. you will like your machine and I see it is working. have you let your DH drive it yet? LOL
